Abstract: 1,006,756. Electron multipliers; image converter tubes. BENDIX CORPORATION. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 19, 1962], No. 36786/63. Heading H1D. An electron multiplier of the kind described in Specification 950,640 comprises an elongated, secondary-emissive channel which is at least partly conical. As shown, an image intensifier comprises a photo-cathode 35, an array of conical tubes 21 having resistive, secondary-emissive surfaces 22, and a phosphor screen 36. The tubes 21 may be of glass having a high lead content, the surfaces 22 being formed by reduction in hydrogen, and the tubes being fused together as described in Specifications 954,248, 971,733 and 965,044. A potential difference is applied between conductive coatings 33a, 34a on the ends of the tubes which may lie in planar or spherical surfaces. The positions of the photocathode and phosphor screen may be reversed for image magnification. Alternatively, the secondary-emissive surfaces may be partly conical and partly cylindrical as in Fig. 4, or partly convergent and partly divergent as shown in Fig. 6.
