    Abstract: Sensors for motor vehicles emit a base signal when the variable which they measure takes on a base value. For example, a road-speed transducer supplies no pulses when either the vehicle is at standstill or when the sensor is defective. A method for providing a reliable operation of a motor vehicle includes the step of starting a substitute/emergency-function immediately when only the base signal is received from the sensor. If it is later determined that the base signal was only emitted because the measured variable took on its base value, then the substitute/emergency-function is again reversed. By starting a substitute/emergency-function basically always when a checked sensor emits no signal, it is ensured that safety measures are taken as rapidly as possible.

    Abstract: Regulating equipment for regulation of the speed, in particular of idling speed, of an engine (10) in a motor vehicle comprises means (42, 28) to control a predetermined value, such as an idling speed target value, in dependence on the speed of travel of the vehicle, for example in such a manner that this increases in amount with increasing speed of travel. Juddering of the vehicle is thereby prevented at engine speeds in the region of the idling speed, such as in convoy travel in dense traffic. The regulating equipment can limit the speed of travel to a minimum value. Idling speed regulation occurs only when the engine is drivingly coupled to the vehicle wheels.

    Abstract: A controlling device for controlling the supply of gases into combustion spaces of a self-igniting internal combustion engine includes a control member for regulating the flow of returned exhaust gas and an air throttle for regulating flow of sucked in air. The air throttle and the control member are linked to pneumatic setting motors which in turn are controlled by pressure transforming means operating with a source of a reference pressure and a source of control pressure. An output of the pressure transforming means is provided with electrically controlled switching means which selectively actuate respective setting motors. The electric control of the pressure transforming means and of the connecting means is made in dependency on operational variables of the engine.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to a safety arrangement for an internal combustion engine having self-ignition where, in the sense of an overall system monitoring, specific signals relating to the operating conditions of the internal combustion engine are continuously monitored. These signals are indicative, for example, of the position of the throttle pedal, the computed rack-travel nominal or desired value, and the rotational speed. The monitored signals are processed and a corrected rack-travel nominal value is generated by means of a minimum-value selection circuit. The corrected rack-travel nominal value signal generated in this manner is fed to the rack controller of an EDC unit. At the same time, a deviation in rack travel is determined utilizing the corrected rack travel nominal value in combination with an actual-value signal of the rack travel fed back from the rack-travel sensor. The signal indicative of actual rack travel also serves for a comparison with the upper and lower limits of the rack-travel sensor voltage; and, depending on the error condition occurring, either the output stage of the rack controller is de-energized and/or the fuel-injection pump is simultaneously shut off by means of an electrical shutoff valve (ELAB); or, a decision for an emergency operation is made.

    Abstract: A fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines is proposed in which cavitation is avoided at the sealing surface between a threaded connection element which contains the pressure valve and a securing flange of the pressure valve housing which protrudes radially outwardly therefrom. The securing flange is attached to a cylindrical portion on the end of the valve housing remote from the pressure line leading to the injection nozzle and a sealing member is fitted into an intermediate chamber between the cylindrical portion and an inner wall of the threaded connection element. This sealing member is pressed with at least one annular contact surface onto the cylindrical housing portion and with a different contact surface, axially displaced with respect to the first, is pressed against the threaded connection element. The sealing member may be embodied as a thin-walled sheet-metal sleeve, may comprise a spiral spring, or may be made of plastic.
