Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a liquid crystal composition showing good switching characteristics in a uniform state and being capable of high-contrast display by mixing a compound purified with active carbon with other components. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition containing a plurality of components is prepared by the process which comprises the step of purifying at least one of the above components with 10-50wt.%, based on the component, active carbon and the step of mixing the purified component with the other components. In this process, it is desirable to purify the component with 20-35wt.%, based on the component, active carbon. It is desirable that the purification step comprises alumina column chromatography or/and silica gel column chromatography. It is also desirable that the component purified with at least active carbon is a liquid crystal component which itself shows a smectic phase, and that the liquid crystal composition is one having a chiral smectic phase.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to obtain the formation of high-grade images with which the overflowing and bleeding of ink are suppressed, the secure hot adhesiveness to various kinds of adherends and further, excellent rigidity after adhesion as specifications of labels, etc., by specifying the m.p. of a hot- melt adhesive layer and the melt viscosity in a range of prescribed temp. SOLUTION: The hot adhesive medium for ink jet consists basically of a base 1, the hot-melt adhesive layer 2 formed thereon and release paper 3 formed thereon. The m.p. of the hot-melt adhesive layer 2 is =10,000 cPs. A thermoplastic high- polymer resin may be preferably used as the chief material of the hot-melt adhesive layer 2. More specifically, such resins include a polyester resin, acrylic resin, etc. The method for providing the one surface of the base 1 with the hot-melt adhesive layer 2 includes a method of coating the release paper with a thermoplastic high-polymer resin which is melted by heating or a resin which is dissolved in a solvent, etc.
