Abstract: PURPOSE:To permit optical modulation having wavelength selectivity by controlling and projecting the absorbed light of the light absorptive heat generating agent fixed in a polymer gel and changing the polymer gel to an optical modulating body in the shrunk state vomiting the solvent by heating or the swollen state of absorbing the solvent by cooling. CONSTITUTION:The absorbed light 7 of the light absorptive heat generating agent is controlled and projected to the optical element fixed with the light absorptive heat generating agent in the polymer gel 2. The polymer gel is changed to either of the optical modulating body in the shrunk state vomiting the solvent 6 by heating or the optical modulating body of the swollen state absorbing the solvent by cooling, by which the light transmitting the optical element or reflecting by the same is optically modulated. The state in which the light absorptive heat generating agent is fixed in the polymer gel 2 refers to the state which said agent is physical fixed in the polymer gel so as to prohibit the free movement of the agent in said gel. More specifically, said state refers to the state in which the light absorptive heat generating agent is fixed by entangling with the network within the three-dimensional network structure of the substrate polymer of the polymer gel. The excellent responsiveness is thereby attained in accordance with the optical information signal.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To form an optical element having an optional refractive index and optional size at a high grade and low cost by supplying a mixd dispersion consisting of org. particles at varied mixing ratios to a molding device and forming a molding having the mixing ratios varying in the axial direction. CONSTITUTION:The dispersions 1', 2' dispersed with the org. particles 1, 2 are filled in supply paths 6, 7 and while the inside air is evacuated, a cock 8 is opened. An ejection device 9 for which a nozzle, etc. are used is preliminarily provided to the top end of the supply path 7 to eject the mixed dispersion flowing out of said nozzle like a mist. The dispersion 1' of the volume corresponding to the volume at which the dispersion 2' flows out first according to the ejection thereof flows into a vessel 5 through the supply path 6. The dspersion 1' and the dispersion 2' are uniformly mixed in the vessel 5 by a stirring means 3'. The mixed dispersion ejecteddlike the mist from the ejection device 9 deposit on a filter 13 in the cylindrical molding device 10. The mixed particles remaining on the filter 13 form a deposited layer, i.e., molding 12 in the above-mentioned manner.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To form an org. optical element having an optional refractive index distribution and optional size at a high grade and low cost by supplying a powder mixture material consisting of org. powder materials at varied mixing ratios to a molding device and forming a molding having the change in the mixing ratios in the radial direction. CONSTITUTION:The org. powder materials 1, 2 which are different from each other are put into vessels 3, 4. A fan 8 for blasting and a fan 9 for mixing are run and poppets 5, 6 are operated to release the materials 1, 2 into a transport pipe 7. The mixed org. powder material 10 is transported and is sent into a molding device 11 having a rotor shape. The space on the outside of the device 1 is sucked by a suction pump 16 through a discharge pipe 15. The material 10 is pressed to a filter 12 by centrifugal force and flow when the device 1 is rotated. The material 10 is then deposited on the filter 12 and a mixed org. powder layer 20 is formed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain farther rapid optical modulation by cooling a heat sensitive medium at the driving of an element. CONSTITUTION:When a switch 6b is closed, electric power is supplied from an external power supply 7 to a resistor heat generating layer 4b and heat generated on the layer 4b increases the temperature of a high molecular substance liquid layer 2. When the liquid temperature exceeds the critical temperature of the high molecular substance, the high molecular substance is crystalized in the liquid medium, the high molecular substance liquid layer 2 in the crystalized part is made uneven state and incident light 10b is remarkably dispersed in the layer 2. Therefore, a sharp repeating resonse can be held for a long period by interlocking cooling means 8, 9 with an optional means for detecting the temperature of the high molecular substance liquid and controlling the temperature of the high molecular substance solution at a temperature slightly lower than its critical temperature.

When a sinusoidal current is impressed to the resistance exothermic layer 4 combined optionally replying to an input information coming from an external electric source 7, the position replying to the input information on the element changes to a non-translucent property from a translucent property.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the destruction by impact and to permit the operation in a deformed state by forming a polymer liquid in such a manner that the liquid can scatter light when heated and is transparent when cooled. CONSTITUTION:Electric power is not supplied to a resistance heating layer 4a in the state 6a in which a switch is held open. Since the contiguous polymer liquid layer 2 is low in temp., the layer 2 is in the nonuniform state in which the polymer and liquid are phase-separated. Incident light 8a is therefore considerably scattered in the liquid layer 2. On the other hand, the electric power is supplied from an outside power source 7 to a resistance heating layer 4b in the state 6b in which the switch is closed. The heat generated in the layer 4b in this stage heats up the liquid layer 2 in the contiguous part. As a result the polymer dissolves into the solvent and the liquid layer 2 is made transparent when the liquid temp. exceeds the critical dissolution temp. of the polymer. Therefore the incident light 8b straightly passes the optical element 20 and is emitted as it is from the rear of the element when the element is of an optical transmission type. The incident light is reflected or absorbed according to the optical characteristics of the heating layers 4a, 4b..., insulating layer 5, etc. in the case of an optical reflection type. The purpose of optical modulation or display is thus attained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct image having high contrast and resolution and to eliminate the limitation in angle of field by sandwiching a soluble polymer which dissolves and exists by heating in a solvent and deposits and exists by cooling between a pair of substrates formed with heating elements on the surface of at least one substrate. CONSTITUTION:The soluble polymer deposits and exists in the solvent in the state (low-temp.) state in which a polymer liquid layer 2 is not heated and therefore the incident ray 6-2 on the low-temp. region 4a of the polymer liquid layer 2 scatters (diffuses). On the other hand, the polymer liquid layer 2 in the region in contact with or proximity to the heated part is also heated and the polymer deposited in the heated region 4 dissolves in the soln. and exhibits transparency when the prescribed position of an IR absorption layer 8 is heated from the outside by the irradiation of, for example, an IR beam 5 according to an information signal. The incident ray 6-1 on the heated region 4 passes therefore approximately straightly through the polymer liquid layer 2 and is emitted from the substrate 1. The heated region 4 restores the original scatterable state when the temp. falls.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct image having high contrast and resolution and to eliminate the limitation in angle of field by sandwiching a gel layer which exhibits light scattering property by heating and exhibits light transmittance by cooling between a pair of substrates formed with heating elements on the surface of at least one substrate. CONSTITUTION:The distribution of polymer molecular chains is uniform in average in the state (low-temp. state) in which the gel layer 2 is not heated and therefore the incident ray 6-1 on the low temp. region 4 of the gel layer 2 passes approximately straightly through the gel layer 2 and is emitted from the substrate 1. On the other hand, the gel layer in the region in contact with or proximity to the heated part is also heated when the prescribed position of an IR absorption layer 8 is heated from the outside by the irradiation of, for example, an IR beam 5 according to an information signal. The distribution of the polymer molecular chains is then divided to a coarse region and a dense region and the gel layer exhibits the light scattering property. The incident ray 6-2 on the heated region 4a is therefore scattered. The heated region 4a restores the original light transmittance when the temp. falls.
