Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display dispensing with rubbing treatment of an alignment layer causing the generation of dust, free from an alignment defect of liquid crystal molecules caused by the dust and capable of obtaining excellent display quality as a liquid crystal display of an in-plain switching mode which displays by the lateral electric field. SOLUTION: Segment electrodes 3 and common electrodes 4 adjacent to each other at an interval are provided on the inner surface of one substrate 2 corresponding to plural pixel regions A and vertical alignment layers 18 and 19 are provided inner most surfaces of the pair of substrates 1 and 2. A nematic liquid crystal layer 20 having positive dielectric anisotropy is provided between the pair of substrates 1 and 2 in the state that the liquid crystal molecules 20a are aligned nearly perpendicularly to the surfaces of the substrates 1 and 2 and the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules 20a is specified to be changed so that the liquid crystal molecules 20a fall down on the surfaces of the substrates 1 and 2 along the direction of the lateral electric field E generated between the segment electrodes 3 and the common electrodes 4 by means of the lateral electric field E.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal motor which can be worked hyperfinely and can exhibit a stable performance with a low power consumption as an extremely small motor. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal motor 1 has upper and lower substrates 2 and 3 which are faced oppositely to each other with a prescribed gap G in between. On the lower surface of the upper substrate 2, first to third electrodes 4-6 are formed at prescribed intervals and, on the upper surface of the lower substrate 3, fourth to sixth electrodes 7-9 are formed in such a way that the electrodes 7-9 are respectively faced to the electrodes 4-6. In addition, a liquid crystal 10 is enclosed between the substrates 2 and 3. Therefore, the motor 1 can be worked in hyperfine structure because the motor 1 can be manufactured by the same manufacturing technique as that used for manufacturing liquid crystal elements. In addition, since the liquid crystal molecules 10a in the area E between the second and fifth electrodes 5 and 8 are successively inclined and rotated in a plane which is nearly normal to the substrates 2 and 3 by repeating the successive impression of an electric field between the first and sixth electrodes 4 and 9, between the second and fifth electrodes 5 and 8, and between the third and fourth electrodes 6 and 7 in prescribed order, the molecules 10a can be rotated surely with low power consumption as an extremely small motor.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of disclination and to increase an aperture ratio. SOLUTION: If the rubbing direction of alignment layers is in a direction shown by an arrow, all of the parts corresponding to pixel electrodes 5 among the line parts 6a of auxiliary capacitor lines 6 are superposed on the upper side parts of the pixel electrodes 5 on the inner side of the upper side of the pixel electrodes 5. The upstream side in the rubbing direction shown by the arrow at the left ends of the superposed line parts 6a is provided with diagonally notched parts 6d notched in the direction nearly orthogonal with the rubbing direction. The occurrence of the disclination is then prevented. Accordingly, there is no need for preventing the light leakage by the disclination by a black mask. Consequently, the apertures 22a of the black mask may be made larger.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device wide in the angle of visibility and simple in display driving mechanism. SOLUTION: Electrodes on the side of substrate 2 provided with color filters RF, GF and BF are provided on the downside and upside of color filters, and since these upside electrodes 12 are made correspondent to the prescribed areas of respective picture elements and the downside electrodes 11 are made correspondent to the other areas of respective picture elements, the rising orientation states of liquid crystal molecules are made partially different in the respective picture elements. At the same time, since the color filters RF, GF and BF are made into double layer films composed of colored filter layers 13a and non- colored filter layers 13b, the impedances of color filters are increased without degrading the transmissivity of light, so that effective voltage to be impressed to the liquid crystal of respective picture elements are made remarkably different between the area to which the downside electrodes 11 of color filters correspond and the area to which the upside electrodes of color filters correspond.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element whose visual field angle is wide. CONSTITUTION: A picture element electrode 22 is formed on a TFT substrate 11; and a lower layer electrode 31, the color filters 33 of RGB colors, and an overcoat layer 34 or the like are formed on a counter substrate 12 opposed to the substrate 11; and also an upper electrode 35 is formed on the layer 34 so as to be connected to the lower layer electrode 31 and also opposed to the part of the picture element electrode 22. The dielectric constant of the color filter 33 is adjusted so as to obtain the optimum angle of visual field angle. Thus, voltage applied to the liquid crystal 13 of an area where the lower layer electrode 31 and the picture element electrode 22 are opposed to each other is set to be at an appropriate value without adjusting the thickness or the like of the color filter 33, so that the visual field angle is made to be wide.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element having a wide visual field angle. CONSTITUTION: Lower layer electrodes 31 are formed on a counter substrate 12 and color filters 33 and an overcoating layer 34 are respectively formed thereon. Upper layer electrodes 35 are formed on the overcoating layer 34 in such a manner that these electrodes overlap partly on the lower layer electrodes 31. The lower layer electrodes 31 and the upper layer electrode 35 are arranged to face pixel electrodes 22. The driving voltage of the liquid crystal display element is impressed nearly as it is on liquid crystals 23 in the regions where the upper layer electrodes 35 and the pixel electrodes 22 face each other when this driving voltage is impressed between the pixel electrodes 22 and the upper layer electrodes 35. The voltage impressed on the upper layer electrodes 35 is divided down by the capacitors consisting of the overlap parts of the electrodes, the color filters 33 and the overcoating layer 34 and is impressed on the liquid crystals 13 in the regions where the lower layer electrodes 31 and the pixel electrodes 22 face each other. Since the regions varying in the impressed voltage are formed within the one pixel, the-visual angle characteristic is improved.

CONSTITUTION: A rubbing sheet 42 alternately arranged with plural kinds of brush stripes (hair tip blocks) A1 , A2 , A3 ..., B1 , B2 , B3 ... in juxtaposition is wound around a revolving roller 40 and is rotationally driven in accordance with the set conditions of the rubbing orientation treatments. Oriented films 12, 22 on one and the other substrates 10, 20 are rubbed by the rubbing sheet 43 and different kinds of rubbing zones a1 , a2 , a3 ..., b1 , b2 , b3 ... corresponding to the brush stripes A1 , A2 , A3 ..., B1 , B2 , B3 are alternately formed on the surfaces. The liquid crystal display element is assembled by disposing both substrates 10 and 20 opposite to each other in such a manner that the rubbing zones formed on the one oriented film 12 face the rubbing zones of the different kinds of the other oriented film.

The liquid crystal molecules A are oriented at the pretilt angle phi meeting the remaining ratio of the long chain alkyl groups per unit areas of the horizontally oriented films 8, 9.

The electrode forming surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 are coated with transparent insulating films 6, 7 consisting of silicon oxide, etc., and the horizontally oriented films 8, 9 for orienting the liquid crystal molecules A in a horizontal direction are formed on these insulating films 6, 7. The horizontally oriented films 8, 9 are formed of the sericin protein obtainable from the cocoons of silkworms and the film surfaces thereof are subjected to an orientation treatment by rubbing.
