    Abstract: Mfg. a rectangular cross-section bar made of a material with a composition gradient perpendicular to two opposite longitudinal sides of the bar, where the material doesn't melt at room temperature, comprises: (a) preparing at least two melted compositions of this material; (b) pouring continuously a sheet (61) of the first composition onto a flat support (4); (c) pouring continuously a sheet (62) of the second composition on the first sheet (61); and (d) ensuring thermal interdiffusion of the two sheets compositions to obtain the desired composition gradient in the cooled bar. Also claimed is an appts. for the mfr. of the above bar comprising: (i) a support (4) moving in a looped travel path with a flat part;(ii) a number of reservoirs (21,22,23) each receiving one of the material compositions and equipped with a bottom nozzle (31,32,33) to form a sheet (61,62,63) of the flowing material; where (iii) the reservoirs are spaced at intervals along the flat travelling part of the support (4) so that the sheets flow one onto the other. Further claimed is a preform (1i) of an optical device with an axial gradient of an optical property, cut from a bar (1) made of a vitreous material according to the above method.

    Abstract: A process to synthetize zircon as an ultra thin coating and comprising: (A) mixing an alcoholic sol resulting from hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide with an alcoholic solution of a chelated zirconium compound and in the presence of and with a doping agent, until a homogenous mixed sol is obtained; (B) forming a matured sol containing colloidal particles and/or the polymeric entities from the mixed sol; (C) forming a coating of the matured sol on a microporous substrate; (D) drying slowly the sol coating into a gel coating free of flaws; and (E) firing the gel coating at a temperature of 900 to 1500 DEG C to form an ultra thin zircon layer. Use of the zircon layer obtained above as an ultrafiltration membrane or as a protective coating.
