Abstract: A drain cassette for a dialysis unit has a fluid channel between venous and arterial connection ports, and a valve may controllably open and close fluid communication between a drain outlet port and the venous connection port or the arterial connection port. A blood circuit assembly and drain cassette may be removable from the dialysis unit, e.g., by hand and without the use of tools. A blood circuit assembly may include a single, unitary member that defines portions of a pair of blood pumps, control valves, channels to accurately position flexible tubing for an occluder, an air trap support, and/or other portions of the assembly. A blood circuit assembly engagement device may assist with retaining a blood circuit assembly on the dialysis unit, and/or with removal of the assembly. An actuator may operate a retainer element and an ejector element that interact with the assembly.

Abstract: A method for discharging fluid from a syringe and for mitigating occlusion conditions includes actuating the plunger of a syringe into a barrel. The method monitors fluid pressure within the barrel of the syringe and determines that an occlusion exists when the fluid pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold. The method actuates the plunger out of the barrel by a predetermined amount in response to the detected occlusion and actuates the plunger of the syringe into the barrel until a measured fluid pressure within the barrel of the syringe exceeds another predetermined threshold. A syringe pump for administering an agent to a patient comprises a housing; a lead screw; a linear cam; a half-nut assembly having first and second half-nut arms each having a first end and a second end, wherein the second ends of the first and second half-nut arms are configured to engage with the lead screw, the first and second half-nut arms are pivotally coupled together, the first ends of the first and second half-nut arms are configured to engage with the linear cam such that actuation of the linear cam toward the half-nut assembly causes the first ends of the first and second half-nut arms to pivotally approach each other, and the second ends of the first and second half-nut arms each includes threads configured to engage the lead screw when the first ends of the first and second half-nut arms approach each other caused by actuation of the linear cam; and a plunger head assembly coupled to said half-nut assembly and operative to drive a plunger of a syringe into a barrel of said syringe.

Abstract: A blood circuit assembly engagement device for a dialysis unit, comprising: an actuator movably mounted to a panel of the dialysis unit adjacent a plurality of control ports, the actuator movable between a retention position and an ejection position; a retainer element coupled to the actuator and arranged, with the actuator in the retention position, to retain a blood circuit assembly mounted to the panel of the dialysis unit on the panel, and arranged, with the actuator in the ejection position, to release the blood circuit assembly for removal from the panel of the dialysis unit; and an ejector element coupled to the actuator and arranged, with the actuator moved from the retention position to the ejection position, to urge the blood circuit assembly away from the panel.

Abstract: Examiner's Abstract A blood line connector for a blood circuit of a hemodialysis unit comprises a tube connection end arranged to engage and seal with a blood circuit tube and a patient access connection end including a member having an internally threaded portion arranged to establish a fluid tight connection with an externally threaded patient access and a pair of locking arms extending from the member toward the tube connection end. Each locking arm having a finger depression portion and a barbed portion, the barbed portions arranged to lock the patient access connection end in sealing engagement with a mating connector on the hemodialysis unit so that an exterior surface of the patient access connection end forms a fluid tight connection with the mating connector when making a press-in type connection, and being arranged so that the barbed portions disengage from the mating connector when the finger depression portions are urged toward each other. Abstract: An enclosure for containing a hemodialysis unit includes a housing (51) suitable to support components for performing hemodialysis including a dialyzer (14), one or more pumps to circulate blood through the dialyzer, a source of dialysate, and one or more pumps to circulate the dialysate through the dialyzer. The housing may have a front panel (511) at which blood circuit connections and dialysate fluidic connections are located, e.g., blood line connections for patient blood access, connections for a reagent supply, dialyzer connections for both blood flow and dialysate, etc. The enclosure may also include a pair of vertical, side-by-side doors (53) hingedly mounted to the housing. With the doors in the closed position, access to the patient access and dialysate fluidic connections may be blocked, and the doors may allow for the retention of heat in the housing suitable for disinfection during a disinfection cycle.
