Abstract: An ink jet printer of the "drop-on-demand" type, for printing of large characters with improved image quality and reliability. Ink is supplied under static pressure to an ink impulse assembly (50), which acts as a positive displacement pump. The ink impulse assembly (50) includes a pressure chamber (60) walled in by an elastomeric membrane (65) having inlet (53) and outlet (56) ports sealed by check valves (54, 57). A solenoid (70)-driven plunger (71) rod (80) displaces the membrane (65) to constrict the chamber (60), causing a prescribed volume to be ejected through a nozzle assembly. The printer enjoys a simplicity of design and is highly adaptable, while avoiding many of the operational difficulties of prior art drop-on-demand ink jet designs. Character height may be adjusted within a certain range using a rotatable nozzle plate, with appropriate adaptations in the character generation electronics.

Abstract: An ion generator for the formation of electrostatic images, including two electrodes (32, 34) at opposite faces of a solid dielectric member (31), using a threshold multiplexing principle for the drive circuit. This apparatus provides a drive signal to each electrode to generate ions in an air region adjacent one of the electrodes, which ions are extracted for electrostatic imaging. Two drive signals each consisting of a sinusoidal alternating potential, out of phase by 180o, intermittently induce the production and extraction of ions. Other time-varying potentials of like electrical characteristics may be used, providing a number of operating advantages. The ion generator produces ions only during print periods, and requires reduced power to achieve given ion outputs. The control electrode (33) may be partially encapsulated to limit the discharge region. Drive circuitry such as low source impedance gated oscillators, or other low impedance drivers, reduce capacitive "cross-talk" in a multielectrode device.

Abstract: Dielectric sealing of porous anodized aluminum, in which moisture in the pores of the oxide coating formed by hard coat anodizing is removed, and the porous anodized surface then impregnated with a dielectric wax. Suitable wax sealants include carnauba and montan waxes. The anodized member (35) is preliminarily heated in order to drive off moisture and other substances from the pores; this heating process may be continued for the purposes of impregnating the pores with the wax sealant (35). Any excess material remaining on the member's surface is removed. After removing material from the member's surface, the member may be polished to a better than .5 micrometer finish. Dielectric imaging members (35, 36) fabricated using these techniques are suitably incorporated in high speed electrographic printers and copiers. One such printing system forms a latent electrostatic image on a dielectric cylinder (36) using an ion emitting print device (30); tones the image; transfers the toned image to an image receptor (50) using high pressure exerted between the dielectric cylinder (36) and a compliant transfer cylinder (48); scrapes off residual toner on the dielectric cylinder; and neutralizes any residual electrostatic image.

Abstract: Apparatus for bit-by-bit duplication of data stored on a flexible diskette. A master disk (15) is driven by a conventional DC drive, which provides a feedback control voltage responsive to the instantaneous speed of the master disk. A slave disk (20) is driven from external index synchronization, which receives signals from the respective disk drives indicative of the angular position of the diskettes, and additionally receives the master drive control voltage. The index synchronization (50) circuitry outputs a motor error correction voltage to the slave disk drive, thereby coordinating the rotation of the respective diskettes. Bits are copies only when the slave disk drive parameters fall withing a narrowly defined window.

Abstract: A screen printing process for imprinting an ink design over release coat substrates carried on a web to form heat transferable labels. The process includes screen printing an ink design image onto the substrate followed by passing the imprinted substrates through a drying section. The ink formulation used in the screen printing step is composed of a base ink vehicle containing a polyamide adhesive resin and a nitrocellulose film forming component, a thixotropic filler and a plasticizer. The formulation exhibits fluidity, adhesive and plasticity characteristics which make the ink particularly suitable to imprint and form heat transferable labels by silk screen printing.
