    Abstract: A first message is sent from a mobile station (M1...M10) to a base station (B1...B10) in a system comprising many cells (C1...C10) when it enters the first region. Measurements are collected from the mobile and an evaluation made on receipt of the first message. A second message is sent by the mobile to the communications system on leaving the first region to end the transmission of measurements and to stop the evaluation. System rules define the limits of the first region according to the relationship between the signal levels of the connected cell, the neighbouring cell and thresholds. An alternative defines it as a region where the error rate exceeds a maximum, defined for each connection.

    Abstract: A system network and method improving handovers, particularly for reducing the amount of inter-cellular transfer information stored in base station controllers or radio network controllers, is disclosed. Instead of storing routing information for every possible inter-cellular handover at each control node, signaling network technology is employed to effectuate communication of all relevant inter-cellular handover information between all of the control nodes, thereby coordinating routing information transference across a distributed system.

    Abstract: In a method of operating a wireless terminal, the wireless terminal (30) sends a request to participate in a circuit switched call with a circuit switched network. Prior to establishment of the circuit switched call the wireless terminal (30) releases or performs an inter-radio access technology handover of an existing packet switched session with an original packet switched network. The wireless terminal (30) then reconnects to the packet switched session to obtain a reconnected packet switched session. Thereafter the wireless terminal (30) interleaves packet switched transmissions of the reconnected packet switched session with voice transmissions of the circuit switched call.

    Abstract: In a mobile communications network that employs diversity combining/splitting, CN-RNC interface streamlining can be accomplished more efficiently by reconfiguring the network diversity legs, which are combined into a single data stream by the serving radio network controller, wherein the serving radio network controller is directly connected to the core network via the CN-RNC interface. Reconfiguration of the network diversity legs is accomplished by releasing the transport level connections which support the network diversity legs prior to CN-RNC interface streamlining, and establishing new transport level connections to support the reconfigured, network diversity legs subsequent to CN-RNC interface streamlining. To establish new transport level connections, the serving radio network controller dispatches binding information to each of the destination nodes associated with the network diversity legs. The destination nodes then utilize the binding information to bind network resources to the transport level connections which support the reconfigured network diversity legs between the destination nodes and the serving radio network controller.
