Abstract: There is described a system and method of handing over a connection to a terminal from a source network element (e.g. base station) to a target network element (e.g. base station) in a packet data network when the source base station is acting as a caching server and sending content data towards the terminal in a session. A handover request is sent from the source base station to the target base station. A context data message (e.g. CXTP message) is sent from the source base station to the target base station, the context data message including session state parameters identifying the state of the session. At the target base station, the session state parameters are retrieved from the context data message and used to identify the state of the session. Content data packets are then sent from the target base station towards the terminal so as to continue the session.

Abstract: Information about virtual private networks—VPNs—in each domain of a multi-domain communications system is provided. By comparing a request for a configuration of a VPN with the provided information of other connected domains, a match can be found. VPN configuration can then be performed based on the outcome of the match. The provided domain VPN information is in one embodiment spread to other domains under constrictions put by SLAs between domain operators. The spreading of VPN information can be performed regularly or triggered by an external event. In another embodiment, the VPN configuration request is instead spread to different domains.

Abstract: The soft state of a header compression scheme in a communication system carrying packet traffic including a real time communication signal can be updated (63) during periods of communication signal inactivity (62), during which there is no need to transmit the communication signal. The header compression soft state can also be updated by stealing bits (83, 84) from the communication signal to carry the header update information (73). If the communication signal includes source encoded data, the header compression soft state can be updated selectively (126) based on the bit rate (122, 124) of a codec that produced the source encoded data.

Abstract: The bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency associated with the point-to-point transportation of internet protocol (IP) data packets in a network environment is improved by employing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) adaption layer two (AAL2) minicells as a bearer. Bandwidth utilization and transmission efficiency may be further enhanced by mapping one or more data fields from the header portion of the IP data packets into one or more look-up tables and then transporting the look-up table addresses in the AAL2 minicell headers rather than the data associated with the one or more data fields in the IP data packet headers.
