Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily manufacture an optical fiber having a desired elliptical core part by depositing a glass film for the core of the fiber on the inner wall of a hollow glass pipe, making the section of the pipe elliptical, grinding the outside to a perfectly round shape, and heating and drawing the pipe. CONSTITUTION:On the inner wall of a perfectly round hollow glass pipe a glass film for a core part having a higher refractive index than the glass pipe is deposited by a vapor phase chemical reaction, and after evacuating the glass pipe, the pipe is melted by heating and bonded to the glass film so as to make the cross-section of the pipe elliptical. Thus, a base material 3 composed of a solid rodlike core part 1 having the desired elliptical shape and a clad layer 2 is obtd. The outside of the material 3 is then polished to a perfectly round shape. By attaching the resulting base material 3' to a spinning device and spinning it at a prescribed drawing rate, and optical fiber composed of a perfectly round clad layer 22 and an elliptical core part 21 can be obtd. easily. This fiber can transmit a photo signal having a prescribed polarizing face without rotating the polarizing direction.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide high resolution with accurate configuration by forming a coating layer thicker than the outside diameter of an optical fiber on said fiber, aligning plural pieces of such coated optical fibers, and forming these into one body while pressurizing the parts near the end parts in the direction intersecting orthogonally with the long axis of the fibers and while holding the coating layers partly removed. CONSTITUTION:A coating layer 2 thicker than the outside diameter of an optical fiber made of quartz glass is provided with a synthetic resin or metal on the outside circumference of an optical fiber 1 consisting of a core 1a for said fiber and a low refractive index glass layer (clad) on the outside circumference thereof. Plural pieces of such coated optical fibers are aligned, and while the parts near the end parts thereof are pressurized in the direction intersecting orthogonally with the long axis direction of the fibers, the layers 2 are dissolved off. In the case of the synthetic resin layers 2, they are removed with a solvent for the same and in the case of the metallic layers 2, they are removed with an aq. soln. of acid or the like. Next, the layers 2 left without dissolution are heated to soften, whereby the end parts formed into one body are obtained. In this way, the bundle arranged accurately with a large number of the optical fibers in both end parts (a), (b) and suited for image transmission requiring high resolution and high fidelity is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the titled optical fiber bundle adaptable to heat resistant fiber scopes for high heat devices and the like by putting glass tubes or required length on both end parts bundled with plural pieces of optical fibers, and uniformly heating the outside circumferential walls of the tubes thereby melt-sticking the glass in one body to the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:Striplike aggregate bundles 2, which are paralleled with optical fibers (particularly of silica system) 1, are tentatively secured and are cut, are put into a forming jig with both end parts being superposed, and further the respective bundles 2 are tentatively adhered and their end parts 3 are inserted into quartz glass tubes 4 of required length. The outside circumferences of the tubes 4 are then uniformly heated to soften and shrink with an oxyhydrogen burner or the like whereby they are melt-stuck to the outside circumferences of the end parts. This yields the end parts 3' which are formed in one body without deviation in the arrangement of the fibers 1. Both end faces are then precisely polished to make optical image transmission and reception surfaces, whereby the fire-resistant optical fiber bundle 5 having the heat resistant and mechanically tough receiving end faces for observation of the inside of blast furnaces and the like is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare an optical fiber having excellent water resistance and chemical stability and large numerical aperture, by covering the outer circumference of the core made of a specific phosphate glass with the clad layer made of quartz glass. CONSTITUTION:The core made of a phosphate glass devoid of the oxide of the I-group or II-group positive elements, is coated with a clad layer made of quartz glass to obtain a glass fiber for light transmission. For example, a slurry of glass- forming oxide obtained by adding highly pure Ga2O3, GeO2 and SiO2 to H3PO4 prepared by the reaction of POCl3 with pure water, is pressed into a quartz tube with high pressure O2 gas, and elongated from the bottom of the tube to obtain the optical fiber. The H3PO4 mixture forms the core. The transparency of the clad layer can be improved and the interface between the core and the clad can be maintained clean to obtain a low-loss optical fiber, by introducing SiCl4 and O2 gas into the quartz tube which becomes the clad layer, thereby coating the inner wall of the quartz tube with highly pure quartz glass layer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To transmit optical images with fidelity by preventing optical fibers from being disordered in array and deforming, by inserting optical transmission lines into each gap of an intermediate assembly consisting of many optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1 which are each composed of a core layer and cladding layer are bundled and elongated in one body to form intermediate assemblies 2-2''. Into each mutual gap of those intermediate assemblies 2-2'', optical transmission lines 21 less in diameter than the intermediate assemblies are inserted closely and then the entirety is united by thermal press-contacting. Thus, the transmission area of an optical fiber bundle, i.e. core parts avoid deformation and a disordered array, transmitting distortion-free optical images with fidelity.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber bundle having an even diameter without twist, by holding the upper end of a preform in which plural optical fibers are aligned and unified with a freely rotatable holding tool within a plane vertical to the shaft of the preform and then elongating by heating the upper end of the preform successively from the other end of the preform. CONSTITUTION:The upper end of a preform 1 in which several hundreds of optical fibers are bundled into a body is attached to a holding tool 2 on the face vertical to the shaft of the preform. The tool 2 is born by a fixed bearing 3 in a free rotating way ans within a horizontal face at its grip part 2a. The bearing 3 contains a ball bearing 8 at a contact part of the part 2a and the bearing 3 to ensure a smooth rotation. The preform 1 is heated and softened in a longitudinal electric oven 4 successively at the other end of the preform to be extended outside the oven through a lead-out roller 5 and then to be formed into a thin rod type intermediate aggregate 6 having an even diameter. Thus the tool 2 can follow the rotation of the aggregate 6 if caused by an irregular rotation, vibrations and the like of the roller 5. As a result, a twist is avoided for the aggregate 6.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber bundle having superior transmission characteristics by providing a porus glass partition plate at one end of a glass tube, inserting plural pieces of fine optical rods in a closely contacting state into the tube from the other end, then etching the surface of the fine optical rods to clean them, thence stretching these under heating. CONSTITUTION:In the production of optical fibers for constituting optical transmission lines having multicores, image guides of high resolution, etc., a porous glass partition plate 2 through which gas can flow is mounted to one end part of a hollow quartz tube or glass tube 1. Several hundred pieces of fine optical rods 3 having clad layers and core glass layers are densely inserted into the tube 1 from the other end. A gas inflow pipe 4 and an exhaust pipe 5 are provided to both ends of the tube 1, and the tube 1 is mounted to a glass lathe then the etching gas such as BBr3, BF3 or Cl2 is introduced. While the tube is being rotated, it is heated, to etch the surface of the fine bars 3 to remove their stains, flows, etc., thereafter, gaseous He or the like is fed therein and the gas is exhausted. Thence, the tube is made solid by a heating means 6 from the end part, whereby the superior optical fiber parent material free from any foreign material and foam is obtained. This parent material is stretched, whereby the superior optical fiber bundle is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To suit a light guide element to a fiberscope, etc., with excellent separation into the background and picture, by providing a metal-containing silica glass layer, absorbing light of specific wavelength, around a fibrous light transmission line. CONSTITUTION:Individual solid wire f1 in a group of light transmission wires f1-f4 is formed of core 1 consisting essentially of silica and coating layer 2 of sliica with added P2O5 and B2O3 and outside of it, light absorptive leakage-preventive layer 3 having added Ti , etc., is provided. A fiberscope or the like obtained by bundling this solid wire f1 allows a picture to be seen clearly enough because visible rays are transmitted through solid wires f1-f4, and also allows it to be seen nealry in violet because the existence of Ti permits the long-wavelength part of visible rays to be absorbed among solid wires f1-f4, so that it can be made clear to discriminate between the background and picture. Further, this leakage-preventive layer 3 adheres well to solid wires f1-f4 and its coefficient of thermal expansion is close to that of coating layer 2, so that it can easily be handled in the process of manufacture.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain easily an optical fiber controlled for OD ratio of a core to a cladding at a given value by detecting a position whereat a reflected light according to a change in a reflected light path which is resultant from fluctuation of a fused glass level arrives with a plurality of detecting elements. CONSTITUTION:There are provided a laser beam source 10 irradiating levels 11, 12 of a fused glass diagonally and a light receiving unit 13 consisting of a plurality of detecting elements which receives a light reflected on the level 11, 12. A position whereat the reflected light according to a change in a reflected light path which is result-and from the level 11 fluctuating to the level 12 is detected on the detecting elements. The levels 11, 12 of fused glass are thus detected easily, a rate of feeding a core forming glass rod and a cladding forming glass rod and a spinning rate of an optical fiber are adjusted according to the detected information, and thus the optical fiber controlled for OD ratio of a core to a cladding at a given value can be formed easily.
