Polyolefins are stabilized with 0À005 to 5 weight per cent, based on the polymer, of each of compounds of Formulae (a) and (b) R 5 (CH 2 ) m S n (CH 2 ) m R 5 , where R 1 is H, Cl, Br or OH; R 2 is H, C 1-18 alkyl or halogen; R 3 is H, C 1-5 alkyl or COOR 4 , where R 4 is a C 1-20 aliphatic radical; R 5 is CH 3 or COOR 6 , where R 6 is C 1-18 alkyl; is 1 to 4 and m is 1 to 19; (a) and (b) being in the weight ratio 1: 9 to 9 : 1. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene or polybutene. The stabilizers may be incorporated by dry or solvent blending or by means of a polyolefin concentrated, and conventional additives may also be incorporated. Many suitable stabilizer components are listed, and examples describe the stabilization of polypropylene with stabilizers comprising 2-hydroxy - 4,5 - benzo - 1,3,2 - dioxastibenol, 2- hydroxy - 4,5 - benzo - 8 - t. - butyl - 1,3,2 - dioxastibenol, 2 - hydroxy - 4,5 - benzo - 6 - hydroxy- 1,3,2 - dioxastibenol, 2 - hydroxy - 4,5 - benzo- 6 - hydroxy - 8 - t. - butyl - 1,3,2-dioxastibenol or 2 - hydroxy - 4,5 - benzo - 6 - hydroxy - 8 - carboxydodecyl - 1,3,2 - dioxastibenol; together with dioctadecyl disulphide, dioetadeeyl tetrasulphide, dilauryl thiodipropionate, dioctadecyl trithiodiacetate, dibutyl dithiodiundecylate, didodecyl tetrathiodiacetate or didodecyl dithiodiacetate.

    Abstract: Polyolefins are stabilized with mixtures of certain bisphenol alkanoic acid esters or amides with organic phosphites. In the examples the stabilizers used are selected from 3,3-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methyl phenyl) butanoic acid dodecyl ester, 4,4-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-pentanoic acid dodecyl ester, octyldiphenyl phosphite, triphenyl phosphite and tridodecyl phosphite.
