Abstract: A method of manufacturing a flat panel display which uses a photocathode as an electron source and a magnet as a collimating block includes putting the photocathode in a storage container (242) containing the phosphor screen and the magnet which has had sealant applied to its periphery, while the storage container is in a vacuum chamber. The storage container is then closed (244) and removed from the vacuum chamber (246). The storage container is then attached to a vacuum pump to maintain a good vacuum (248). Power is supplied to the display, via the storage container, to allow the screen to be aligned under operating conditions (254). The alignment is carried out by small electric motors within the container. Finally the phosphor screen, magnet and photocathode are sealed together by curing the sealant (256).

Abstract: Display apparatus comprises a display screen. Drive means generates an image on the display screen in response to a video signal input from an external video source. The drive means comprises a memory for storing a gamma value and gamma correction means for modifying the input video signal as a function of a gamma value. Gamma variation means permits adjustment or the gamma value stored in the memory in response to a control signal input.

Abstract: An electron source having a cathode and a permanent magnet having perforated channels extending between opposite poles of the magnet. Each channel forms electrons received from the cathode into an electron beam for guidance towards a target. The electron source has applications in a wide range of technologies, including display technology and printer technology.

Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode 20 for emitting electrons and a permanent magnet 60. A two dimensional array of channels 70 extends between opposite poles of the magnet. The magnet 60 generates, in each channel 70, a magnetic field for forming electrons from the cathode 20 into an electron beam. A screen 90 receives an electron beam from each channel. The screen 90 has a phosphor coating 80 facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. The phosphor coating 80 comprises a plurality of pixels each corresponding to a different channel. A grid electrode 40 is disposed between the cathode and the magnet for controlling flow of electrons into each channel. Deflection means, e.g. anodes 50, sequentially addresses the electron beam from each channel to each pixel of the corresponding group. Rotational alignment means finely aligns electron beams from the channels with corresponding pixels of the phosphor coating. The rotational may be provided by making anodes 51,52 resistive and generating a differential voltage across them. The magnitude and direction of the differential voltage is used to provide rotational alignment. The invention also provides a method of coarse alignment of the magnet with phosphor stripes on the screen by providing a collimated light source, illuminating the phosphor stripes through channels in the magnet using the light source, and aligning the two dimensional array of channels with the phosphor stripes, either visually or automatically.

Abstract: A display device comprises a screen 90. A back plate 10 is sealed to the screen to form an evacuated chamber. An area cathode 20 is disposed between the back plate and the screen. A permanent magnet 60 is disposed between the cathode and the screen. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels 70 extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. An anode phosphor layer 80 is disposed between screen and the magnet for receiving electrons from the channels. Grid electrodes 41,42 between the area cathode and the magnet control flow of electrons from the cathode into the channels. Anodes 50 between the magnet and the anode phosphor layer control flow of electrons from the channels towards the screen. In one such arrangement, the screen comprises a layer of a plastic material 11, e.g. acrylic, and possibly a thin layer of glass 12. In another such arrangement a plurality of spacers 14,15 are disposed between the screen and the magnet. Each spacer has a tapering elongate body and may be of circular or star-shaped cross-section. In another such arrangement, a plurality of spacers are disposed between the magnet and cathode, located in recesses formed between the grid electrodes. In yet another such arrangement, the cathode comprises a back-plate 10 and a silica glass substrate 22 peripherally sealed to the back-plate to produce a chamber. A gas is contained in the chamber. A layer of photo-sensitive material 21 is disposed on the surface of the substrate external to the chamber. A cathode phosphor layer 23 is disposed between the back plate and the substrate. A pair of electrodes 25 energises the gas to generate a plasma 24 for exciting the phosphor to generate light energy to produce electron emissions from the photo-cathode.
