Abstract: A method in a data processing system for providing content from a distributed database to a client. In a preferred embodiment, a transcoding proxy server receives a request for content from a client machine. The transcoding proxy server retrieves the content from an originating server. The retrieved content is provided in a first format type. In response to a determination that an increase in efficiency would be obtained by allowing the client to process the content in the first format type prior to transcoding the content into a second format type, the transcoding proxy server sends the content to the client in the first format type. Furthermore, in response to a determination that the client does not have content processing software for processing the content in the first format, the transcoding proxy server sends content processing software for the first format type along with the content in the first format type to the client. The transcoding proxy server then transcodes the content from the first format type into the second format type and sends the content in the second format to the client.

Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product which allows a user to view and navigate reduced-content web pages on a wireless connection. Upon the user's selection of specific web pages, the pages are then delivered to the user by a less expensive connection, as in a conventional wired internet connection. The delivery is accomplished by several methods, according to different embodiments, including by an electronic mail message, by "push" delivery to an internet- connected data processing system, and by providing a set of hyperlinks to the wired internet connection which reference the selected pages, among other methods. The user is thereby able to view, on a second internet-connected data processing system, the data selected when using the wireless internet- connected data processing system.

Abstract: A system, method and program of the invention enables a user to view, at a later time, transitory messages, e.g., advertisements, that the user may have previously missed. The multimedia objects containing the messages are stored automatically without user action when the multimedia object is rendered at the client. In response to a user action, a list of th e stored multimedia objects are displayed to the user along with selectable controls for rewinding and replaying the list of stored multimedia objects. The user may select each multimedia object from the list one at a time for replaying, or the user can use the selectable controls to replay or rewind a succession of the stored multimedia objects. The multimedia objects may include an animated GIF multimedia object, a moving picture type multimedia object, a vector graphic multimedia object, a nd a static image multimedia object.

Abstract: A method, system, and program is provided for displaying icons on a data processing system. The number of icons to be displayed on the computer screen is determined. Th e boundary area for displaying the icons on the computer screen is calculated. The sizes of the icons are then scaled to a size that allows all icons to be displayed in the boundary area while utilizing all available display space. The minimum and maximum sizes of the icons can be limited based on us er preferences. If the icons cannot be scaled to fit within the boundary area using the user selected minimum size, then only a portion of the icon is displayed. In this manner, all icons are scale d and displayed at a size that utilizes the full boundary area of the display screen.

Abstract: A system, method and program of the invention enables a client in a network of computers to participate with a plurality of merchants across several Web servers in electronic transactions for the purchase of products from the merchants. The client is enabled to make one transaction with one merchant dependent upon the results of another transaction with another merchant. More specifically, each item that is available from any merchant and is selected by a customer using the client is represented at the client as a separate object having states associated therewith. A buy, hold, or conditional state will set a lock on the corresponding object at the Web server such that no other transactions with other customers can take place for that specific item while the current customer is actively using it. A conditional state sends a signal to the merchant to assist in contacting another merchant in order to cancel a previous transaction that the other merchant had with the current customer.

Abstract: A security server is provided to maintain security profiles for many customers. Customers are authenticated to the security server using a secret identifier, such as a password, or a digital signature. The customer can add, delete, and modify security images included with the customer's profile. In addition, the customer grants merchants or other requestors the right to retrieve one or more of the customer's security features. The authorized requestors are included in an authorization list. The customer restricts when the requestors can request the selected security features. When a requestor requests security features corresponding to a user, the requestor' s identity is verified, such as using a digital certificate or an identifier. A check is also made to determine whether the customer has granted the requestor access to the requested security features. The features are either returned to the requestor or an error is returned depending on the requestor's authorization.

The method may include the database server being updated to hold current information, which may be received from a plurality of local authority servers. The database server may be maintained by a local or reference authority. The database server may determine the relevant jurisdictional information for a product by mapping the product to a product code. The method may further include replicating the collected current information in the database server to a plurality of e-commerce servers. Jurisdictional information maintained by the database server may include tax rates, warranty information, customs duty information or restrictions on sale of a particular product in a specified jurisdiction.
