Abstract: The present invention relates to data storage apparatus comprising a removable data storage medium, first control means for initially "powering on" the apparatus and for enabling the apparatus to receive a data storage medium, mode setting means for setting the apparatus into an "operate" mode state or a "non-operate" mode state, means for receiving commands to perform operations in connection with the data storage medium, and second control means for controlling the operation of the apparatus on receipt of the commands. According to the invention the apparatus is characterised in that the mode setting means sets the apparatus into a "non-operate" mode state on operation of the first control means to "power on" the apparatus or to enable the apparatus to receive a storage medium, and the second control means, on receipt of a command, checks the mode state (132) and performs operations as follows: (a) if the mode state is "non-operate", (i) checks to see if the received command is a "Mode Set" command (140), (ii) if the received command is not a "Mode Set" command, rejects said command (141), and (iii) if the received command is a "Mode Set" command, sets the mode state to "operate", and (b) if the mode state is "operate" causes performance of the received command (142).

Abstract: A data recorder, preferably of the magnetooptic type, employs a rotating record storage disk (30). The record storage disk has a track starting primary data storing sector circumferentially adjacent to the track starting sector or a small plurality of alternate data storing sectors which are not addressable directly by mechanisms outside of the recorder as are the primary recording sectors. Whenever a one of the primary sectors in a given track is found to be defective, then one of the alternate sectors in that same track receives data from a one of the primary storing records of sectors in the same track. A small number of alternate sectors are selected to extend circumferentially for creating an elapsed scan time over the element of sectors not less than the elapsed time required for the recorder to switch from scanning one track to scanning an adjacent one of the tracks. In a magnetooptic recorder, the elapsed time selected for scanning the small plurality of alternate sectors is also not less than the time to reverse the magnetic biasing field for erasing and recording on the disk. Alternate sectors provide both for alternate data storage and for the preparatory steps of track jumping or switching and magnetic field bias reversal. Second alternate ones of the tracks are selected in the event all of the alternate sectors in a given track are filled with data from defective ones of the primary sectors in the same track as the alternate sectors.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a re-writable data storage member (10) comprising a plurality of spaced apart addressable data storage areas (12) for recording and storing data and a plurality of non-data storage areas (15) interposed between adjacent ones of the addressable data storage areas for recording signals not representing data, the storage member being adapted to be scanned in a direction over the storage areas. According to the invention the storage member is characterised in that one of the addressable data storage areas contains first machine readable indicia indicating that the storage member contains data which is not to be changed from any original recording of the data, another of the addressable data storage areas contains second machine readable indicia indicating whether or not the storage member has been erased of data in its entirety, and each of the non-data storage areas contains third machine readable indicia indicating whether or not one of the respective adjacent addressable data storage areas can be written into. The invention also relates to a data storage system comprising a re-writable data storage member as above and to a method of operating such a data storage system.

Abstract: A large capacity data storing disk includes a volume table of contents (VTOC) which identifies allocated ones of data storage tracks and identification of the data contents therein, indications of unallocated data storage track and an indication of which of the data storage tracks on the large capacity disk surface are unformatted. The indications may also include indications of unallocated "erased" tracks that do not contain data residuals from previous recordings. Those unallocated tracks having such erased condition in a count key data record format (CKD) require a home address record on each of the formatted tracks. The home address record may include indications of rotational position of defects to be skipped over during the recording and readback operations. A specific embodiment of the invention using a magnetooptic record medium is described.

Abstract: A common bus architecture is disclosed which has truly distributed control. A plurality of bus interface units (BIU) are interconnected by the distributed system data bus (DSDB) which includes a clock line (4), a serial command line (CMD), a serial bus allocation line (BAL) and a two byte wide data bus (8). A central clock connected to the clock line which defines the message frame timing, is the only centralized "control" element in the system. Each BIU may in turn be connected to either one or several data processing units, an I/O port, or a bridge connecting to still another similar bus network. By prior arrangement, several BIUs will establish a set of relative priorities, commands and corresponding data transfer operations. The BIUs share the DSDB in a time division multiple access mode which requires them to agree to a time divided allocation of the common bus based upon their distributed assessment of the relative priorities of their pending messages. When a processor serviced by a first (talker) BIU wants to transmit data over the DSDB to a processor serviced by a second (listener) BIU, a three stage priority contention resolution operation takes place to obtain an exclusive allocation of the DSDB for the desired data transmission.
