    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve effectiveness of a library having plural of pickers. SOLUTION: The plural highly functional pickers in the automatic data memory library are disclosed, the library discriminates a starting/ending position of a received moving job, a library control device arranging the moving job in a job queue is provided. A picker processor receives information describing moving information of each of the present moving job of the other picker through a communication link from the other picker. At completion time of the moving job, the picker, communicating with the library control device, selects the moving job avoiding interference with movement of the other picker. Movement of the selected moving job is determined so as to avoid interference with a stored moving profile of the other picker. The moving profile is transmitted to the other picker through the communication link, the moving job is executed in accordance with the moving profile. Further, the moving information containing the present position and a vector is transmitted.

    Abstract: A data file having a plurality of data blocks is divided into one or more transfer units of data blocks. Before data storage, each transfer unit of data blocks is subjected to its own data compression cycle to create a group of compressed data blocks. The size of the data transfer unit, in bytes, is selected to be facile for addressing and retrieving individual recorded groups of compressed data blocks while providing good channel utilization and compression efficiency. Also the data-transfer unit size is selected in part based upon data storage efficiency, i.e. the storage of the compressed data should fill as many addressable data storage areas as possible. Upon recording each group of compressed data bytes, an entry is made into a file directory for enabling addressing the recorded compressed data blocks.

    Abstract: Multiple intelligent pickers 26 for an automated data storage library, the library having a library controller 22 which identifies the start and end locations of the received move jobs, and places the move jobs in a job queue. The picker processor receives information over a communication link 33 from other pickers describing movement information for the current move job of each of the other pickers. Upon completion of a move job, the picker communicates with the library controller, selecting a move job which avoids interference with the movement of the other pickers. The movement for the selected move job is determined so as to avoid interference with the stored movement profiles of the other pickers. A movement profile may be communicated to the other pickers over the communication link, and the move job is conducted according to the movement profile. Alternatively, movement information comprising the current location and vector are communicated.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a re-writable data storage member (10) comprising a plurality of spaced apart addressable data storage areas (12) for recording and storing data and a plurality of non-data storage areas (15) interposed between adjacent ones of the addressable data storage areas for recording signals not representing data, the storage member being adapted to be scanned in a direction over the storage areas.     Abstract: A large capacity data storing disk includes a volume table of contents (VTOC) which identifies allocated ones of data storage tracks and identification of the data contents therein, indications of unallocated data storage track and an indication of which of the data storage tracks on the large capacity disk surface are unformatted. The indications may also include indications of unallocated "erased" tracks that do not contain data residuals from previous recordings. Those unallocated tracks having such erased condition in a count key data record format (CKD) require a home address record on each of the formatted tracks. The home address record may include indications of rotational position of defects to be skipped over during the recording and readback operations. A specific embodiment of the invention using a magnetooptic record medium is described.
