Abstract:
A data storage diskette incorporates a hub having a reduced diameter. A circular sheet of magnetic media is mounted about the hub. The reduced diameter imparts added flexibility to inner regions of the sheet of magnetic media between the bond point of the sheet and a point at which magnetic heads access the sheet for data read and write operations. The added flexibility enables the sheet of magnetic media to more readily be bent to align with a gap defined by the magnetic heads. The enhanced alignment enables a read/write axis of the magnetic heads to be perpendicularly aligned with the sheet of magnetic media in the inner regions, thereby maintaining signal amplitude in such regions.
Abstract:
A write protect mechanism includes an indicator element configured for movement within a channel to indicate a write condition and a write protect condition of a data storage diskette. The indicator element can be integrally molded with the diskette housing. The indicator element is disengaged from the housing, rotated approximately ninety degrees, and reinserted in the channel prior to closing the diskette. The diskette permanently retains the indicator element within the channel. The indicator element may include spring members for exerting a bias against structures formed along side walls of the channel during movement. The spring members may include indentations for engaging the structures formed on the side walls. The structures are aligned with positions indicating either the write condition or write protect condition of the diskette.
Abstract:
A method for using a coating apparatus (10) to improve productivity and reducing material waste when a continuous flow of a coating liquid onto a web (12) is desired and when the continuous flow is intentionally stopped to address a coating problem or to end, or temporarily postpone, a coating session. The method includes the use of flow control means (22) which enables the continuous flow to be quickly and cleanly started and stopped to address a coating problem or to end or temporarily postpone the coating session.
Abstract:
An optical-readable data disc (10) includes piracy-protection featuring noncontiguously sequenced data files in zones (28) separated by head-derailing barriers (26). The disc includes a plurality of data-placement zones and read-blocking barriers constructed along the spiral track over gaps (24) which separate the zones. Data files are recorded in each of the zones (28), and an address-information data file (32) includes data which identifies addresses of data files to be sequentially read in noncontiguous zones. By arranging the data files noncontiguously with barriers in gaps between the data files, efforts to duplicate the master disc by attempting to read the data files contiguously are deterred and/or prevented.
Abstract:
A medical imaging system for communicating image information between a plurality of different medical imaging modalities (12) having different input protocols and a plurality of different laser imagers (18) having different output protocols takes advantage of a reusable, object-oriented software architecture having a plurality of functionally independent components. The individual components can be configured in a communication pipeline (26) to communicate image information between a medical imaging modality (12) and a laser imager (18) according to desired protocols in a networked manner. Each component can be interchanged with a differently configured component to facilitate communication of image information according to a different protocol, thereby reconfiguring the pipeline (26) to achieve significant flexibility. The software architecture is scalable to produce a plurality of communication pipelines (26), each of which can be configured according to desired protocols. Thus, the system can support a different protocol by either swapping components to reconfigure a single communication pipeline (26), or by simply selecting an alternative among a plurality of differently configured communication pipelines (26) in the scalable architecture. The software architecture is equipped with a network executive component (14) designed to configure one or more communication pipelines (26) for network communication.
Abstract:
A method of retensioning a tape pack in a two-hub, belt-driven data cartridge, wherein the tape pack includes tape having one or more tracks, is described. The method is characterized in that it includes sensing at least one position of a track of the tape within the data cartridge and then conditionally retensions the tape pack as a function of the at least one sensed track position. The retensioning may be determined by comparing the sensed position of the track to at least one predetermined limit; the predetermined limit being based on statistical data. A drive apparatus for performing the retensioning method is also described.
Abstract:
A container (10) and liner (19) combination includes an interlock feature (80). Multiple sheets of photosensitive material (18) are placed on the liner (19). The container (10) has a base (16) in which the liner (19) is positioned. The base (16) has an interlock feature (80) and the liner (19) has a mating interlock feature (76). The interlock feature (80) prevents movement of the liner (19) in the feed direction as well as in a direction opposite the feed direction.
Abstract:
A flexible printing plate (10) and a method for securing the plate (10) to a printing cylinder (18) of a printing press. A first bend (38A) in an end portion of the flexible printing plate (10) is positioned between a first segment (30A) and a second segment (32A) of the end portion. The end portion can be inserted into a slot (20A) in the cylinder (18). The end portion can have holes (48) therein which mate with a pin bar (50) in the cylinder (18).
Abstract:
4-Substituted isoxazole compounds are useful as co-developers in combination with hindered phenol developers to produce high contrast black-and-white photothermographic and thermographic elements. The photothermographic and thermographic elements may be used as a photomask in a process where there is a subsequent exposure of an ultraviolet or short wavelength visible radiation-sensitive imageable medium.
Abstract:
A composition suitable for use as a polymer layer disposed on a semi-reflective layer in an optical medium, such as an optical storage medium. The polymer layer includes an acidic component that promotes adhesion of the polymer layer to the semi-reflective layer.
