Abstract: A polymer or copolymer of maleic acid is produced by neutralizing (I) maleic acid in an aqueous medium with (III) an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia at a molar ratio of (I) to (III) in the range of 100:0 to 100:90, polymerizing (I) with a polymerization initiator, adding (III) a further amount of the alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia at a molar ratio of (I) to (III) in the range of 100:100 to 100:130 in total through the previous addition and this addition and continuing the polymerization to the complete effect.

Abstract: An agueous slurry of a water-insoluble or slightly water-soluble metal hydroxide can be effectively filtrated and dehydrated by the addition of a novel anionic surfactant of the following formula (1): (I) wherein R represents an alkyl or alkenyl group of 8-24 carbon atoms, A represents an alkylene group of 2-4 carbon atoms, X represents SO3M (M being H, K, Na or NH4), PO3M (M being K or Na) or CH2COOM (M being X or Na), and n represents an integer of 1-100 to the agueous slurry of the metal hydroxide or to the washing water. The water content of the metal hydroxide is efficiently reduced by this technique.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of coal powder having e.g. at least 30% by weight coal, preferably 30 - 85% by weight having good flowability properties are provided by employing, as the dispersing agent, at least 0.01%, but preferably 0.01 to 5.0% by weight of an anionic surface active agent having the formula: ¢R-O-?-CH2CH2O-?mSO3!nM wherein R is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 6 to 22 carbon atoms or an alkyl- or alkenyl-substituted aryl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms in the substituent thereof. M is a cation having a valency of from 1 to 3. m is an integer of from 2 to 50, n is a number of from 1 to 3 and is the same as the valency of the cation. The aqueous coal dispersion so provided may be used and transported in a practical way.

En el paso (ii), los dispersantes ionicos están contenidos en una cantidad del 0.01 al 0.5 por ciento en peso del combustible en emulsion obtenido en el peso (ii).
