Abstract: 23,385. Kitsee, I. Oct. 22. Telegraphs.-In a system for quadruplex telegraphy, particularly adapted for submarine cables, a telephone and siphon recorder or the like are used as receivers, and one transmitter sends current impulses which rapidly alternate in direction. The cable, with its artificial line A for " duplexing " by means of the usual arrangement, is shown connected to the siphon recorder B, telephone C, and through the wire I to the key D. This key is connected through the contacts E, E' to the positive and negative poles, respectively, of the batteries F, F , the contacts being formed of pins e, e secured by stops c, c', so that when the key D is actuated to the right or left, it pushes one of the pins and breaks contact with the other. Stops g, g are also provided, and resistances R are inserted in the circuit of the batteries. This circuit is connected to a lever K, which is arranged between contacts L, L similar to the contacts E, E'. The contacts L, L are connected to opposed batteries N, N' throagh resistances R, and two electro-magnets connected to a battery and vibrator (not shown) vibrate the lever K between the contacts L, L'. Any other mechanical or electrical vibrating-device may be used. A wire 3 connects a key M to the wire 2. the key being normally connected through the wires 4, 5 to earth. When the operator at Z moves the key to right or left, he transmits an impulse in one or the other direction, and affects the siphon recorder at the receiver. If the key M is simultaneously operated, a succession of impulses varying in direction flows from the transmitter X to line, which is readily detected by means of the telephone, but does not seriously affect the siphon recorder. Messages can thus be simultaneously sent from the two transmitters X,Z. An induction coil may be subituted for the vibrating-device shown at X, its secondary being connected to line; switches are provided for cutting out the batteries and connecting the cable to earth.

Abstract: 7586. Kitsee, I. March 30. Telegraphs. - In submarine telegraphy and in long distance working on land, the receiving - instrument is a sounder operated through a relay. Fig. 1 shows the relay device diagrammatically, and Fig. 3 shows the connections for duplex working. The cable currents pass through a suspended coil H of siphon recorder type, and cause the deviation of the contact-arm k, one end of which dips into a conducting liquid at k . The contact arm plays between the prongs j, j of a fork attached to a suspended body I, the movement of which affords automatic compensation for change of zero. The prong j is covered with insulating material. The sounder S is provided with opposing electromagnets s, s of which s is the stronger. When contact is made between the arm k and the fork, the battery t is short-circuited and the electromagnet s attracts the armature. The transmitting-key a short-circuits the battery b , which is stronger than the battery b and normally opposes it in the line. The relay device may be of the reflecting galvanometer instead of the siphon recorder type ; it may be enclosed in a vessel V filled with oil or water. The signals may be transmitted by positive and negative currents, the suspended coil closing one or other of two relay circuits.

Abstract: 15,271. Kitsee, I. July 10. Paper machines. - Consists in an electrolytic method of cleaning and restoring wire cloths applicable to Fourdrinier and other machines, and also to dandy rollers and like parts. The wire cloth A is guided by rollers C, E into an electrolytic cell D, in which the liquid may be acid, or alkaline, or a solution of common salt or of a salt of the metal of which the wire is composed. The cell may be raised or lowered by a hand-wheel G through worm gearing. The wire cloth forms the cathode and is connected to the battery H or other source of electric energy through a roller brush or other means, while the containing vessel forms the anode. The wire cloth is passed through the liquid and is cleaned by the electrolytic action, and, if a solution of a salt of the metal of the wire is used, the cloth is reinforced by a slight deposition of the metal. In this latter case, the containing vessel is composed of, or lined with, the metal, or a separate anode may be used. The same results may be obtained by passing along the wire cloth in contact with a felt-covered metal roller, provided with a reservoir, from which an adjustable thin sheet or spray of the electrolytic solution falls on the felt covering, the wire cloth forming the cathode and the metal roller the anode. The electrolytic moisture is removed by a thorough douching with water.

Abstract: 14,508. KitsÚe, I. June 15. Primary batteries. -The positive electrode consists of an amalgam D filled in a molten state into a cup or cement F and having a central conducting-rod D . The lower part of the cup is covered by a cap F filled with cement. The negative electrode consists of a central conducting-rod D , and a mass E of one of the higher lead oxides, preferably formed by passing an electic current through one of the lower oxides, and compressed into a plaster of Paris case D . Both electrodes are suspended from the cover B of the battery as shown.
