Abstract: Aircraft (10) carries at least two clusters of barrel assemblies. At least one cluster is oriented normal to the longitudinal axis of aircraft (10) and at least one other cluster is oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of aircraft (10). Each cluster comprises a plurality of barrel assemblies, with each barrel having a plurality of axially disposed projectiles therein. Each projectile is associated with a discrete, sequentially activated propellant charge for propelling it through the muzzle of the barrel. Various methods of deploying a multiplicity of projectiles onto a target from aircraft (10) are also described and claimed. The projectiles deployment might occur at any time whils aircraft (10) is approaching the target, overflying the target, or departing from the target. The projectiles may include smoke canisters, high explosive canisters, flares, electronic and thermal countermeasures, mines, grenades or cameras.

Abstract: Anti-missile missile (10) includes a missile configured to track and interce pt an incoming missile travelling along path (12). Missile (10) includes at lea st one barrel assembly (13) having a multiplicity of projectiles stacked axiall y within barrel assembly (13), together with discrete selectively ignitable propellant charges for propelling the multiplicity of projectiles sequential ly through the muzzle of barrel assembly (13). The multiplicity of projectiles produce a fragment column (20) along path (12) to destroy the incoming missile. Alternatively, anti-missile missile (10) can be guided to produce a direct hit at point (18) on the incoming missile. Barrel assembly (13) can include an aiming mechanism so that barrel assembly (13) can be rotated through sector (15, 16) to target path (12).

Abstract: Set defence means (12) for defending designated area (10) including at least one monitor (14) for monitoring designated area (10) to detect any zone therein in which a new presence appears. Defence (13) is capable of debilitating personnel present anywhere in designated area (10). Communicati on means is also provided to communicate between monitoring means (14) and defence means (12) for triggering selective activation of defence means (12) for delivering a debilitating attack to the detected zone. Defence means (12 ) may include machine guns, grenade and rocket launchers, cannons, or multi- barrel weapons each having barrels (16) loaded with multiple sequentially fired projectiles (15) selectively fired by electronic controls. Monitor (14 ) can be associated with an array of sensors (11).

Abstract: A barrel assembly comprising a barrel (37); a plurality of projectiles (30) axially disposed within the barrel for operative sealing engagement with a bore (36) of the barrel; and a plurality of discrete propellant charges for propelling each projectile of the plurality of projectiles sequentially through a muzzle of the barrel (37). Each projectile of the plurality of projectiles includes a tapered anvil portion (31); a sealing portion (35) extending about the tapered anvil portion for sealing engagement with the bore (36) of the barrel (37) upon the projectile being inserted into the barrel before firing, the sealing portion being forwardly moveable relative to the tapered anvil portion for operative freeing from the tapered anvil portion and for providing a bypass passage between propellant charges. The tapered anvil portion (31) includes an anvil extension forming a spine (33) abutting the tapered anvil portion of a trailing projectile of the plurality of projectiles, whereby if the tapered anvil portion of the trailing projectile of the plurality of projectiles has an increased resistance to forward movement, the sealing portion (35) of the trailing projectile is urged to move forward along the tapered anvil portion by exposure of a rear face (38) of the sealing portion to respective ones of the plurality of discrete propellant charges for forward propulsion of the sealing portion (35) relative to the tapered anvil portion (31).

Abstract: A method of minimising misfiring or alleviating their consequences is provided by forming at least each trailing projectile (30) in a series of housed projectiles with a sealing portion (34) extending about a tapered anvil portion (31) and moveable therealong for expansion into sealing engagement with the barrel (11). The sealing portion (34) disengages forwardly in response to a misfire or the like to provide a bleed path for igniting the propellant charge (41) associated with the next leading projectile (30).
