Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means useful for a bomb, a missile, a close-attack warship defensive means and a hand gun, and used for exiting a large number of projectiles in a short time. SOLUTION: A gun barrel assembly 10 is provided with gun barrels 12, projectile assemblies 14 axially disposed within the barrel 12, propellant charges 16, ignition members 18, and control means 20. The projectile assemblies 14 are sequentially fired from the barrels. The present invention also discloses an arming system, barrel structure, means for preventing compression of the propellant charges and means for ensuring sealing between the projectile assembly and the barrel. Abstract:
A gun including a barrel assembly feed (19) for advancing a plurality of barrel assemblies (14) of the type having a plurality of projectiles stacked axially within each barrel assembly (30) together with discrete selectively ignitable propellant charges for propelling the projectiles from each barrel assembly (30), the plurality of barrel assemblies (14) being linked together in spaced apart parallel relationship (15) and locating one or more barrel assemblies (30) in a firing station wherein the firing station operatively supports the one or more barrel assemblies (30), the gun further including a charge initiator associated with the firing station for selectively initiating said discrete selectively ignitable propellant charges of one or more barrel assemblies (30) operatively supported by the firing station. The barrel assembly (30), has an inner barrel (32) made of a hard, non-deformable material and an outer casing (33) of a ductile material. The outer casing may be deformed by the slots (20) and sprocket teeth (21) of a sprocket drive.
Abstract:
Barrel assemblies (10) each include a plurality of projectiles (11) arranged in-line within barrel (12) and associated with discrete selectively ignitable propellant charges (13) for propelling projectiles (11) through the muzzle of barrel (12). Projectiles (11) are intended for civilian or non-military purposes and include holding body (17) in which matter or objects may be transported. Projectiles (11) are arranged with one another and barrel (12) so as to prevent rearward travel of an ignited propellant charge to the trailing propellant charge. The matter or objects contained within holding body (17) may include explosive charges for seismic exploration, fire retardants, fire extinguishing means, pyrotechnics, herbicide, insecticide, fertiliser or seeds. Methods of delivering loaded projectiles (11) for civilian purposes are claimed.
Abstract:
Set defence means (12) for defending designated area (10) including at least one monitor (14) for monitoring designated area (10) to detect any zone therein in which a new presence appears. Defence (13) is capable of debilitating personnel present anywhere in designated area (10). Communication means is also provided to communicate between monitoring means (14) and defence means (12) for triggering selective activation of defence means (12) for delivering a debilitating attack to the detected zone. Defence means (12) may include machine guns, grenade and rocket launchers, cannons, or multi-barrel weapons each having barrels (16) loaded with multiple sequentially fired projectiles (15) selectively fired by electronic controls. Monitor (14) can be associated with an array of sensors (11).
Abstract:
A method of denying access to a designated area (10) wherein said method includes monitoring the designated area (10) to detect the presence of an intruder, and initiating an attack on said intruder by discharging projectiles (15) from a barrel assembly (13). Barrel assembly (13) includes one or more barrels (16), a plurality of projectiles (15) axially disposed within each barrel (16) for operative engagement with the bore of barrel (16), and discrete propellent charges for propelling respective projectiles (15) sequentially through the muzzle of barrel (16). The monitoring can be performed (15) remotely from designated area (10) by sensing means (14), or on-site by way of sensors (11) distributed within designated area (10). The intruder can be military personnel such as one or more infantrymen, or a manned or unmanned vehicle such as an armoured car or tank.
Abstract:
Missile (10) includes one or more of barrel assemblies (11) which are displaced from the centre of gravity of missile (10). Each barrel assembly (11) includes a plurality of projectiles axially disposed within the barrel, and each projectiles is associated with a discrete propellant charge for propelling the projectile sequentially from the barrel. Each array of barrel assemblies (11) is capable of selectively firing the projectiles from selected barrels whereby missile (10) is accelerated by the reactionary force generated by said firing of projectiles and the missile is deflected onto a new course or trajectory. This enables missile (10) to be steered to intercept its target even if the target is undertaking evasive manoeuvre. Each barrel assembly (11) can include up to twelve projectiles.
Abstract:
A fire fighting apparatus (20) for fighting a fire (10) having a relatively large area or volume (11, 12), said apparatus including a targeting system (23) for identifying a target area to be doused with fire retardant and an ordnance (21) for discharging a multiplicity of projectiles (22) having the fire retardant contained therein (32). The ordnance of the apparatus includes at least one barrel assembly (30), said at least one barrel assembly having a barrel (39), a plurality of projectiles (35) axially disposed within the barrel for operative sealing engagement with the bore of the barrel (39), and discrete propellant charges (36) for propelling respective projectiles sequentially through the muzzle of the barrel, whereby said fire retardant is dispersed over the target area or within the target volume.
Abstract:
A method of minimising misfiring or alleviating their consequences is provided by forming at least each trailing projectile (30) in a series of housed projectiles with a sealing portion (34) extending about a tapered anvil portion (31) and moveable therealong for expansion into sealing engagement with the barrel (11). The sealing portion (34) disengages forwardly in response to a misfire or the like to provide a bleed path for igniting the propellant charge (41) associated with the next leading projectile (30).
Abstract:
A method of forming a temporary airborne image (12) including the steps of arranging a plurality of projectiles in each of one or more barrel assemblies (10) wherein said projectiles include image forming matter; firing a predetermined number of the plurality of projectiles from selected barrel assemblies (10); and deploying the image forming matter to form a temporary airborne image.
