    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a novel compound excellent in transparency, thermal stability, affinity. etc., and especially useful for optical materials, shape memory polymers, specific elastomers, etc. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula [EX is -O-(CH2)n-(m is 1-8),-(OCH2CH2)n- (n is 1-3); k is 0, 1; R is 1-10C alkyl; further -(X)k-O- and R are bonded to the arbitrarily different C atoms of the naphthalene ring, respectively]. For example, 2-(4-methyl-1-naphthoxy)ethylvinyl ether. The compound of formula I is obtained e.g. by reacting a vinyl ether compound of formula II (Z is halogen) with an alkylnaphthyl alcohol of formula III in the presence of a interphase transfer catalyst in a polar solvent at 50-150 deg.C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title resin having low hydrolyzable chlorine content without producing a gelatinized substance as a byproduct, by treating a hydrolyzable chlorine-containing polyhydric phenol epoxy resin with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in a mixed solvent having a specific composition. CONSTITUTION:A hydrolyzable chlorine-containing polyhydric phenol epoxy resin is treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide (preferably NaOH) in a mixed solvent of an aromatic hydrocarbon and 1-30wt.% based on the hydrocarbon of an alcohol preferably 50-100 deg.C for 0.5-3hours to give the aimed resin. Toluene and xylene are preferable as the aromatic hydrocarbon used in the mixed solvent and methanol is preferable as the alcohol.
