Abstract: A wireless system includes base station transceivers (102-104) to communicate with at least one mobile station (108), the base station transceivers communicate with a network controller (110). The base station controls a header for a packet frame to be communicated between the base station transceiver and the network controller wherein a portion of the header identifies the frame as one containing no data package. The data bits of the header field may contain a predetermined bit pattern for a frame including no data package. Information received by the base station from the mobile station may be dropped, and the header information replaced with the specified bit pattern, if a decoding metric passes a threshold. Abstract: A code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system (100) has improved control by accurately characterizing coverage and loading parameters related to the CDMA communication system (100). To accurately characterize coverage and loading parameters related to the CDMA communication system, parameter meshes corresponding to parameters of the CDMA communication system are generated. The parameter meshes are evaluated, either individually or in combination, to provide comprehensive information regarding the performance of the CDMA communication system. Based on the results of the evaluation, a controller (113) within the CDMA communication system (100) controls the parameters to improve call quality, loading, etc. of the CDMA communication system (100).

Abstract: A method is provided of updating an estimated channel impulse response of a maximum likelihood sequence estimator within a radio receiver (12 and 13). The method includes the steps of computing a rate of change of a channel impulse response from a current estimated channel impulse response and a previous estimated channel impulse response, selecting an update step size as a function of the rate of change of the estimated channel impulse response, and updating the estimated channel impulse response of the maximum likelihood sequence estimator based upon the selected step size. Apparatus is also provided of practicing the method in receiving and decoding a signal.

Abstract: A method in a wireless communication device may include receiving a plurality of sub-frames, each sub-frame having time-frequency resource elements, at least one of the sub-frames having a control channel. In some implementations, the plurality of sub-frames forms a continuum of concatenated sub-frames. Each of the plurality of resource allocation fields of the control channel may indicate a resource assignment to the wireless communication device based on a channel quality report, as well as resource assignments in sub-frames of the continuum of concatenated sub-frames. At least one sub-frame of the continuum of concatenated sub-frames may include information indicating that at least some of the resource assignments are frequency diverse.
