Abstract: A wireless communication receiver comprises a SNR measurement logic (112) for measuring a SNR value of the received signal and signal processing logic (108) arranged to process the received wireless signal (Fig. 1, not shown). The signal processing logic (108) comprises demodulator logic (255) operably coupled to log likelihood ratio (LLR) logic (262) and decoding logic (265). A scaling factor (Q), dependent upon the measured signal-to-noise ratio, is applied to the vector of LLR values provided by de-mapping unit (260). The values are then saturated by converting any values outside the range [-A...+A] to one of -A or +A. The values are then quantized prior to input to a FEC decoder. Scaling factors corresponding to SNR values may be stored in a memory element. Applications include dual-mode TETRA-1 and TETRA-2 receivers.

Abstract: A method for use in a mobile communication system for estimating the location of a target mobile station (MS) which includes receiving signals from the target MS (N) at a plurality of receivers (MS 1 , MS 2 , MS 3 ) in different locations and calculating the location of the target MS (N) from information obtained from the received signals, wherein at least one of the receivers (MS 1 ) is a searching MS and wherein the calculation of location is carried out by the searching MS (MS 1 ). The method may involve the target MS and the searching MS or MSs communicating by a direct mode of operation (DMO) link. The searching MSs may conveniently have GPS attachments. A mobile station which may be used as the target MS or as a searching MS and a system incorporating the same is also disclosed.

Abstract: A means for determining the distance between a first and second wireless communication terminal is disclosed whereby a first terminal receives a signal comprising a composite multipath derivative of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed signal transmitted by a second terminal. The received signal 109 is demodulated 202 and resolved into a plurality of components corresponding to different path length components in the received signal and the component corresponding to the shortest path length is identified 212. For the identified component, the time of travel from the second terminal to the first terminal is determined 213. The first terminal may further determine a strength value for each of the resolved components. Each strength value may be compared with a threshold value to determine if a strength value is considered to be non-zero such that only components having non-zero strength values are included when determining the component having the shortest path length. The signal transmitted by the second terminal and received in a multipath derivative form by the first terminal may be a physical layer convergence procedure PLCP training signal. The terminals may be part of a local area network wherein the first terminal may comprise an access point terminal AP and the second terminal may comprise a remote unit terminal RU.

Abstract: A wireless communications system 300 includes a wireless serving communication unit 322 serving a plurality of remote units 312-316 with a communication resource 318-320. The at least one wireless serving communication unit 322 includes a transmitter (421, see figure 4) for transmitting data on an outbound communication resource, and a receiver (422, see figure 4) for receiving a communication on an inbound communication resource, wherein said inbound and outbound resources have a variable communication resource offset. Said resource offset may be a frequency difference between inbound and outbound resources in FDD or a inbound and outbound timeslot separation in TDD. Information relating to said resource offset may be encrypted and transmitted to at least one of said remote units. Also disclosed is a communication unit 322-332, 312-316 adapted to operate in said communications system 300, and a method of communication. By using a variable communication resource offset, the potential for a third party to jam a communication between the wireless serving unit 322 and a remote unit 312-316 is reduced.

Abstract: A data communication device, such as a PCMCIA modem, for connection to a computer has a first operably energised "on" state and a second not operably energised "off" state. Abstract: In order to prevent unintentional actuation of a mobile telephone function, one or more functions are disabled while it is detected that the telephone is in an inactive state. The disabled function may include the transmission of a call set-up signal, the receiving of data messages, or the replacement of an audible call announcement by a vibratory one. Some or all of the functions operated by the keypad may be disabled. In the embodiments described, the inactive state is detected when the telephone (1) is placed in a holder (2). Detection may be by a magnet (4) in the holder which switches a Hall effect device (3) on the telephone, by mechanical actuation of a switch, or by a light or infra-red actuated switching device.
