    Abstract: A method for use in a mobile communication system for estimating the location of a target mobile station (MS) which includes receiving signals from the target MS (N) at a plurality of receivers (MS 1 , MS 2 , MS 3 ) in different locations and calculating the location of the target MS (N) from information obtained from the received signals, wherein at least one of the receivers (MS 1 ) is a searching MS and wherein the calculation of location is carried out by the searching MS (MS 1 ). The method may involve the target MS and the searching MS or MSs communicating by a direct mode of operation (DMO) link. The searching MSs may conveniently have GPS attachments. A mobile station which may be used as the target MS or as a searching MS and a system incorporating the same is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An audio communication unit includes an audio processing function (110, 210) operably coupled to a receiver and an audio input (130), the audio processing function (210) including an estimation filter (212) to generate substantially a replica of an echo signal (230) received at the audio input (130). The replica of the echo signal (230) is subtracted from the audio signal and echo signal (260) thereby allowing substantially only the user's audio signal (265) to be transmitted to a receiving communication unit. The audio processing function (210) includes a weight function unit (510, 550) that determines a convergence vector for at least one polynomial coefficient of the estimation filter (212) based on the at least one polynomial coefficient and an echo path impulse response, in order to generate the replica of the echo signal (230). The adaptation of filter polynomial coefficients, based on the coefficient (preferably filter tap value) and a typical impulse response improves the acoustic echo cancellation in a vehicle or other noisy environment, by reducing the residual echo transmitted over a communication path.

    Abstract: A wireless communications system 300 includes a wireless serving communication unit 322 serving a plurality of remote units 312-316 with a communication resource 318-320. The at least one wireless serving communication unit 322 includes a transmitter (421, see figure 4) for transmitting data on an outbound communication resource, and a receiver (422, see figure 4) for receiving a communication on an inbound communication resource, wherein said inbound and outbound resources have a variable communication resource offset. Said resource offset may be a frequency difference between inbound and outbound resources in FDD or a inbound and outbound timeslot separation in TDD. Information relating to said resource offset may be encrypted and transmitted to at least one of said remote units. Also disclosed is a communication unit 322-332, 312-316 adapted to operate in said communications system 300, and a method of communication. By using a variable communication resource offset, the potential for a third party to jam a communication between the wireless serving unit 322 and a remote unit 312-316 is reduced.
