    Abstract: An assembly 28 for actuating and controlling braking of a car of an elevator system is provided. The assembly includes at least one braking device 20 mounted on the car, supported between the car and a hoistway for movement with the car within the hoistway, and configured to apply a braking force to the car. The assembly also includes at least one corresponding actuator 34 supported by the hoistway and configured to selectively engage the braking device to prevent movement of the car.

    Abstract: An illustrative example elevator assembly includes a frame having vertically oriented beams and horizontally oriented beams connected to the vertically oriented beams. A first elevator cab is supported within the frame between the vertically oriented beams. A pantograph linkage includes a plurality of links. The pantograph linkage is supported on one of the horizontally oriented beams. The pantograph linkage is connected with the first elevator cab such that different positions of the first elevator cab relative to the frame correspond to different relative positions of the links. A second elevator cab is suspended by the pantograph linkage beneath the frame. The different relative positions of the links place the second elevator cab in different positions relative to the frame.

    Abstract: A linear propulsion machine and system (10) is disclosed that includes a stator (30) having a plurality of teeth (34) and a mover (32) moveable in a linear direction along the stator (30). The mover may include a plurality of spaced apart ferromagnetic strata (40), a plurality of slots (42), a plurality of wire coils (44), and a plurality of magnet layers (46). Each of the slots (42) may be adjacent to at least one of the strata (40). Each coil (44) may be disposed in a slot (42). Each magnet layer (46) may be sandwiched between strata (40) and disposed inside one of the plurality of coils (44). Each coil (44) is disposed perpendicularly to the direction of magnetic flux of the magnet layer (46) around which the coil (44) is wound. In an embodiment, the teeth (34) or the magnet layer (46) may be disposed at an angle.

    Abstract: An elevator system includes an elevator car having an electrically powered car subsystem. A guide rail of the elevator system is constructed and arranged to guide the elevator car along a hoistway and in a direction of travel. An electromechanical propulsion system includes plurality of primary windings positioned along the hoistway, and a permanent magnet coupled to the elevator car for imparting motion to the elevator car in response to a drive excitation. A secondary winding is coupled to the elevator car and disposed adjacent to the permanent magnet along the direction of travel, and wherein the secondary winding is configured to utilize an excitation switching frequency ripple to generate a current to power the car subsystem.
