Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some cases, devices such as band limited (BL) or coverage enhancement (CE) user equipment (UE) having limited transmitting and receiving capability may operate using a subset of a system bandwidth of a carrier (e.g., narrowbands). To support frequency hopping or frequency diversity in transmissions, for example, such devices may utilize retuning when a resource allocation moves from a first narrowband to a second narrowband. Retuning, however, may create challenges when transmitting and receiving capability is limited. Aspects of this disclosure may support a flexible starting physical resource block (PRB) for indicating new resource allocations for BL or CE UEs. In some aspects, a UE is disclosed which may retune between consecutive transmission time intervals (TTIs) or subframes, for example, from a first tuning band to a second tuning band (e.g., a newly defined retuning narrowband).

An example method generally includes determining one or more narrowband regions partitioned from wider system bandwidth for communicating with a base station, determining resources, within the one or more narrowband regions of a first subframe, for transmission of sounding reference signals (SRS) by the UE, deciding whether or not to transmit SRS on the determined resources of the first subframe, and transmitting or not transmitting the SRS on the determined resources of the first subframe based on the decision.

The UE utilizes a plurality of downlink carriers in the unlicensed spectrum occupying at least a first minimum bandwidth by the plurality of downlink carriers and a plurality of uplink carriers in the unlicensed spectrum occupying at least a second minimum bandwidth with the plurality of uplink carriers. The UE performs communication using one or more of the plurality of downlink carriers and the plurality of uplink carriers.

At times, large data transmissions, including multiple TBs of data may be transmitted using NB communication, and it may be important that each TB be successfully received by the users. The apparatus may transmit data comprising a plurality of TBs in a narrow band communications system, including repeating a transmission of the plurality of TBs, using any of a number of repetition patterns. The apparatus may use error correction encoding across multiple TBs. The transmission may be a single cell transmission or a multi-cell transmission.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. One method may include a user equipment (UE) determining whether it is configured to support a modulation scheme such as, a quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM). The UE may identify a plurality of transport block size (TBS) values based on whether the UE is configured with the modulation scheme, and identify a scaled TBS value that is based on a length of a transmission time interval (TTI). The UE may map the scaled TBS value to a TBS value of a plurality of TBS values (e.g., a plurality of TBS value options). As such, the UE may communicate, with a base station during the TTI, data on a transport block having a size corresponding to the mapped TBS value.
