Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent luminous elements of equal luminous intensity from being unevenly distributed and to prevent generation of a linear pattern or the like by making arrangement of plural luminous elements different in adjacent pixels and sub-pixels. SOLUTION: In a display device which is provided with pixels formed to a matrix shape, two luminous elements 11, 12 as display elements having different luminous intensity are arranged at a pixel. Arrangement of two luminous elements 11, 12 at each pixel is in transposition relation to each other when pixels adjoining in a transverse direction (a direction orthogonally crossing an aligning direction of luminous elements in an image) are compared. In such arrangement, when the same intermediate tone is expressed at each pixel, light emitting luminous elements are uniformly dispersed and generation of linear patterns is prevented. Otherwise, it can be said that linear pattern is hard to visually recognize since spatial frequency of a pattern in a transverse direction exceeds visibility limit.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device which can be driven with a low power consumption and in improved in image quality. SOLUTION: Luminous pulse widths of a red luminous light source 3R, a green luminous light source 3G, and a blue luminous light source 3B of a backlight system 3 arranged behind a liquid crystal panel 2 driven in time- division manner are set according to color mixture ratio of standard white, and the light sources differ from each other in the pulse width. Therefore, each light source can be driven the same voltage in accordance with a specification, moreover, it is possible to improve a white balance at the time of additive color mixture when the light sources are driven to emit light in time-division manner. Consequently, the liquid crystal display device 1 driven in time-division manner can be decreased in power consumption and also can be improved in image quality.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shut off the electric fields between scanning lines, signal lines and counter electrodes and to prevent impression of DC voltage by disposing peripheral electrodes on the peripheries of the pixel electrodes of one substrate and arranging light-shielding films on the other substrate so as to face this substrate. SOLUTION: Peripheral electrodes 3 are formed in a region on the upper left side on an interlayer insulating film 106. Any material, such as materials used for pixel electrodes 2, signal lines X and scanning lines Y may be used for the formation of the peripheral electrodes 3, as long as these materials are thin films having electrical conductivity. Since the device is provided with light-shielding films 114 to face the peripheral electrode 3, shielding effects of the peripheral regions of the pixel electrodes are enhanced. A potential equal to the potential of counter electrodes 113 is applied to the peripheral electrodes 3 and the electric fields between the signal lines X and the scanning lines Y and the counter electrodes are shut off and DC voltage will not be impressed to the liquid crystals 111, with which deterioration is prevented and the longer service life is achieved. When the impression of the DC voltage at the liquid crystals 111 is prevented, the reliability at high temperatures is enhanced, and the mounting to aircraft and rolling stock is made possible.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device which is free from malfunctions and is capable of making high-speed operation by eliminating the phase difference by deviation in timing of a clock CL and antiphase clock CL* of the liquid crystal display device of an active matrix system. CONSTITUTION:There are two methods as the method for decreasing the phase differences of the clock. First is a method for connecting such a circuit (pulse correction circuit 1914) which prevents a clock signal and antiphase clock signal from simultaneously turning to an 'H' or 'L' between a clock signal line and an antiphase clock signal line. Second is a method for incorporating an antiphase clock signal generating circuit onto the same substrate. These two circuits are disposed just before a shift register for a higher effect. Then, the disposition of these circuits for each of respective bits may be said to be the most ideal method. A further higher effect is obtd. if the pulse correction circuit 1914 and the antiphase clock signal generating circuit are combined.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To optimize the driving method, to make characteristics of nonlinear elements in a display screen uniform, and to eliminate retained image and obtain high picture quality by supplying plural selection pulses in a selection period, and applying reverse data, generated by inverting the white and black of an original image signal to the nonlinear elements right before the original image signal is applied to the nonlinear elements. CONSTITUTION:The selection period is divided into three periods T1-T3 and a positive, a negative, and a positive signal are applied to pixels respectively. A signal with a duty ratio d3 which is applied in the period T3 is the original signal and a signal with a duty ratio d2 which is applied in T2 is the inverted signal of the d3 and satisfies d2+d3=1. In general, a current which is sufficient for rewriting flows to a nonlinear element when applying polarity-inverted pulses. so when the inverted signal and original signal are written successively twice, the polarity needs to be inverted in advance. A signal with a duty ratio d1 which is applied in T1 is made constant irrelevantly to image data.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the amplitude of an image signal impressed on a liq. crystal as well as to prevent the deterioration of the liq. crystal by forming a passivation film so that the part through which light incident from an opening passes is made thinner than the other part. CONSTITUTION:A passivation film 109 is formed so as to make the thickness small in the region through which light incident from an opening 116 passes and to make the thickness relatively large in the other region where signal lines 108 and TFT 123 are present. The TFT 123 is physically protected, the deterioration of a liq. crystal 111 can be prevented by a sufficient interval from the lines 108 or the TFT 123 and the amplitude of an image signal impressed on the liq. crystal 111 can be increased.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the quality of an image by arranging picture element electrodes on an insulating film which covers at least part of an active element and wiring. CONSTITUTION:There is the insulating film on the element and there are picture element electrodes 4 on it, so thin film transistor TETs 41, 42, 43, and 45 and a data line 47 are covered with the electrode 48. Liquid crystal 49 is driven with an electric field between a counter electrode 51 and the electrode 48. The electrode 48 is formed of a transparent conductive film and polarizing plates are arranged on and under insulating substrates 40 and 50 to form the transmission type display device; when the gap between electrodes 48 is positioned right on the line 47 and a scanning line, wiring operates as a light shield layer and light transmitted through other parts is used effectively to obtain a bright picture with a high contrast ratio, thereby obtaining the excellent image quality.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a high-definition image by providing plural liquid crystal light valves and arranging respective picture elements formed on a screen by light transmitted through the valve in a gap between the respective picture elements by another liquid crystal light valve. CONSTITUTION: The optical system is adjusted so that the picture element 4 of a liquid crystal light valve 2 may form the image in the gap of the respective picture elements 3 of the liquid crystal light valve 1 in the case projection is performed by using the light valve 1. Thus, the number of picture elements on the screen is twice as large as that of the light valve, and also the vertical resolution thereof is twice as high as that. Furthermore, the gap between the picture elements hardly exists and the image becomes smooth. An image signal is alternately written in the liquid crystal light valves 1 and 2 in every horizontal scanning period. Then, the selection time of the picture element is twice as long as the case the picture elements having the same number are formed by one light valve, and allowance is obtained in the write of a thin film transistor.
