Abstract: PURPOSE:To miniaturize the projection lens of a projector in an illumination device used for the projector such as a liquid crystal projector. CONSTITUTION:In the illumination device of the projector that light from a point light source 11 is made a parallel light beam, transmission original plates 19R, 19G and 19B(liquid crystal panels) are irradiated with the parallel light beam and the light beams transmitted through the plates 19R, 19G and 19B is projected on a screen, the light from the light source 11 is made the parallel light beam by a parabola reflecting mirror 2 arranged at the back part of the light source 11 and a spherical reflecting mirror 3 arranged in front of the light source except the output part of the parallel light beam. Besides, a parabola reflecting mirror whose diameter of aperture is almost equal to the required illuminating diameter of the parallel light beam and whose focal distance is set so that converging efficiency becomes 50% is used as the mirror 2. As the mirror 3, a spherical mirror whose diameter is somewhat larger than the required illuminating diameter of the parallel light beam is used.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a color picture image of high luminance and good color balance by using a tungsten lamp, etc., by reducing the length of light path of blue light after dividing into red light, green light and blue light until composing shortest and at the same time extending the length of light path of red light longest. CONSTITUTION:Light from a tungsten lamp 11 is divided into three primary colors by dichroic mirrors 15-17 of blue, green, red, and divided colors are composed by a synthesizing dichroic mirror 20, and the composed light is projected on a screen 28 from a projector lens 22. The light path of red light from the tungsten lamp 11 to the projector lens 22 is longer than those of green light and blue light, and light paths of green light and blue light become the same length. Accordingly, red light diverges more than other colors by the length of light path and becomes nearly the same quantity with green light and blue light. Thus, the good picture image of well balanced colors as a composed color image of three primary colors can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To convert completely polarized light to parallel illumination by inverting the one advance direction of the polarized light components obtained from a polarized beam splitter, by a plane reflecting mirror, and using the other as the illuminating light.
CONSTITUTION: A light from a light source 1 consisting of a transparent light emitting body and a spherical reflecting mirror 3 or an elliptical reflecting mirror centering around this transparent light emitting body is paralleled by a paralleling lens, and this parallel light is supplied to a polarized beam splitter 7 through a λ/4 optical phase plate 23. An advance direction of one of an S polarized light component or a P polarized light component obtained from this polarized beam splitter 7 is inverted by a plane reflecting mirror 22, and the other of the S polarized light component or the P polarized light component obtained from this polarized beam splitter 7 is used as an illuminating light. One of the S polarized light component or the P polarized light component obtained from the polarized beam splitter 7, whose advance direction is inverted by the plane reflecting mirror 22 executes one reciprocating motion between the polarized beam splitter 7 and the light source 1, is supplied to the polarized beam splitter, synthesized with the other, and becomes an illuminating light.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable low power driving of driving voltage and enable stable operation by using a PLZT sintered body that shows memorability at normal temperature and shows secondary effect at electrooptical shutter driving temperature. CONSTITUTION:An electrical shutter 3 is provided between linear polarizing plates 1, 2. Opposed electrodes 4, 5 are arranged in the PLZT ceramics sintered body of the shutter 3. Polarizing plates 1, 2 are so selected that direction of electric field vector of linearly polarized light selected by them intersect at right angle, and the direction of electric field of the sintered body 6, i.e. the direction of optic axis, is made about 45 deg.. When linearly polarized light advances in the shutter 3 after passing through the plate 1, the rotation of vector takes place depending on applied voltage of the shutter and the thickness of the plate, and the light passes through the plate 2 rotating 90 deg.. The shutter 3 shows memorability at normal temperature, and shows secondary effect at specified electrooptical shutter driving temperature. Thus, driving by low power becomes possible.
