Abstract: 1,234,583. Colour television tubes. SONY CORP. 18 Sept.. 1968 [20 Sept., 1967 (2)], No. 44315/68. Heading H1D. In a colour television tube using red, blue and green phosphors, a larger exciting beam current must be applied to the green phosphor than to the other two phosphors to produce white light, and this is achieved by making the control grid aperture for the green beam of larger diameter than the apertures for the other two beams. A triple electron gun may have a common cathode and separate control grids, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), or separate cathodes and a common control grid, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The larger aperture for the green beam makes the cut-off voltage lower, and this is avoided by covering the aperture with a diametral strip (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) or with a.spider's web arrangement (Figs. 10-13, not -shown). As described the gun is applied to a tube using coplanar beams, the outer beams being converged at the plane of a beam selecting grid or mask by a fixed deflecting system, Fig. 1 (not shown). The central beam is the green beam, and the outer beams pass through the peripheral :portions of - an electrostatic focusing lens so that they are subject to spherical aberration, and consequently the spot sizes of the three beams are about the same.

In a plural-beam colour television display tube in which the beams BB, B G , BR intersect at the main focusing lens L and are converged to a common point at the beam selecting grid or shadow mask GP, the convergence system F comprises an inner pair of plates P, P 1 at a common potential and an outer pair of plates Q, Q 1 which are connected at tQ, tQ 1 to separately adjustable voltages whereby the outer beams B B , B R may be individually deflected. The plates Q, Q 1 may be D.C. isolated from each other and common or separately adjustable dynamic convergence voltages also applied to them. The convergence system F may comprise two sets of deflection plates Q, Q 1 (Q 1 , Q 2 ; Q 1 1 , Q 1 2 , Fig. 4) whereby each of the outer beams BB, BR is first further deflected outwardly from the centre beam B G and then deflected inwardly to the convergence point.

Abstract: In a video signal reproducing device having a cathode ray tube in which at least one electron beam is focused at a phosphor screen and is made to scan the screen in line-scanning and vertical directions, and in which the beam focusing is effected by an electron lens constituted by at least two tubular electrodes arranged coaxially in succession along the axis of the tube with a relatively low potential being applied to one of the electrodes and a relatively high potential being applied to the other electrode or electrodes; electron beam scanning velocity modulation is effected by forming the tubular electrode to which the low potential is applied in two parts which are axially separated along a vertical plane inclined relative to the tube axis, and by applying across the two parts of such tubular electrode a control signal which is produced in response to transient changes in the luminance or brightness of the video signal being reproduced. Such control signal is preferably provided by a circuit which employs only a single delay line to provide the velocity modulating control signal as the difference between a luminance or brightness component of the video signal and such component delayed twice by the delay line, and a further control signal constituted by the luminance or brightness component delayed once by the delay line and which is employed for modulating the intensity of the electron beam or beams.

Abstract: In a signal play-back device having a substantially flat record carrier or disc provided with first and second oppositely facing reflective surfaces and a signal recorded as variations in at least the second surface, and an optical system in which a first lens directs a laser light beam against the first record carrier surface for reflection by the latter and passage back through the first lens for focussing by the latter at an image point remote from the first record carrier surface, and a second lens effects a predetermined focussing of such image point at the second record carrier surface for scanning the recorded signal variations, with the light beam reflected from the latter, and having corresponding variations in its beam energy, passing back through the second lens toward a light detector for providing an output corresponding to such variations in beam energy, and in which the first and second lenses have magnification factors for maintaining the predetermined focussing of the image point at the second record carrier surface irrespective of movements of the latter toward and away from the second lens; a third lens is interposed in the path of the light beam between the second lens and the light detector and is dimensioned and positioned to focus, at the plane of the light-receiving surface of the light detector, a plane which is spaced from the second lens toward the third lens by a distance equal to the focal length of the second lens.

Abstract: A signal control system for controlling the level of color signals to modulate the density of the electron beams in a color cathode ray tube having an array of phosphors that emit light of different colors, and in which at least one of the phosphors has a luminosity saturation characteristic that is different from the others. The system includes means to limit the peak signals applied to control the beam that strikes the phosphor least subject to saturation, the purpose being to prevent that phosphor from being excited beyond the level at which the other phosphors can maintain a balanced degree of luminescence.
