    Abstract: In a color picture tube having an apertured beam selecting grill or mask through one or more electron beams are made to land on predetermined color phosphors applied to the face plate of the tube, thermal expansion of the grill or mask is compensated for, so as to avoid mislanding of the beam or beams, by providing an auxiliary magnetic deflection means located in back of the main magnetic deflection or scanning means and operative in dependence on the operation of the main deflection means to produce magnetic flux in opposition thereto. The current flowing in the auxiliary magnetic deflection means is decreased with increasing temperature by means of a thermosensitive magnetic means so as to similarly decrease the magnetic flux opposing that of the main deflection means, whereby the effective center of deflection of the beam or beams is shifted rearwardly in response to increasing temperature.

In a colour television display tube in which a plurality of beams B B , B G and B R lying in a common plane intersect at the centre of the main focusing lens L and are converged laterally to a common point at the colour selection grid or shadow mask Gp by a system F which, as shown, comprises a centre pair of shielding plates P, P 1 and an outer pair of deflection plates Q, Q 1 , a coil 16 is provided to generate an axial flux in the vicinity of the lens L in order to effect a twisting displacement of the outer beams B B , B R about the axis of the system. By this means vertical misconvergence of the beams at the screen may be corrected, such misconvergence being due, e.g., to mechanical twist of the plane in which the beams are emitted, to spherical aberration of the deflection yoke D, to various other mechanical errors, or to the effect of the earth's magnetic field. Static vertical misconvergence is corrected by supplying current to the coil 16 from an adjustable D.C. source 17; dynamic vertical misconvergence is corrected by supplying to the coil 16 from source 18 saw tooth waves synchronized with the horizontal and vertical sweep signals applied to the deflection yoke. Dynamic horizontal misconvergence is corrected by applying a dynamic convergence deflection voltage synchronized with the horizontal sweep signal across the plates P, Q and P 1 , Q 1 of the convergence system F. Lateral shift of the beams B R , B B due to the earth's magnetic field may be corrected by a ring magnet 22 having two oppositely wound, series-connected coils connected to an adjustable D.C. source 25. The magnet 22 and the coil 16 may be included in a coil assembly having an insulating support 28, Fig. 9, provided with radial flanges 32, 33. Coil 16 is wound between flanges 32, 33 and the core of magnet 22 is formed in two halves 23a (23b), each half having end holes for receiving support pins 36 projecting axially from flange 33. All the beams may be laterally shifted by a further colour purity magnet 40, Fig. 1, similar to the magnet 22. The magnet 40 is mounted on screws (49, Fig. 11) extending through an end flange (45) of the deflection yoke assembly D. The magnets 16, 40 may be constituted by rotatable permanent ring magnets.

The plates Q, Q 1 may be D.C. isolated from each other and common or separately adjustable dynamic convergence voltages also applied to them. The convergence system F may comprise two sets of deflection plates Q, Q 1 (Q 1 , Q 2 ; Q 1 1 , Q 1 2 , Fig. 4) whereby each of the outer beams BB, BR is first further deflected outwardly from the centre beam B G and then deflected inwardly to the convergence point.

In a colour television receiver utilizing a single-gun three-beam picture reproducing tube 10, Fig. 1, in which electron lens means L 1 , L act on the beams to direct one (E G ) along the tube axis and to cause the other two (B B ), (B R ) to diverge so that they pass between respective pairs of deflecting plates P 1 , Q 1 and P, Q, static convergence of the three beams is effected by a deflecting voltage Vc applied between the plates of each pair and generated by rectifying by diode 30 the voltage developed across the secondary winding of a transformer 23 the primary of which is connected via an adjustable impedance 25 to a winding 24 on the line (horizontal) output transformer 21. The transformer 23 provides isolation between the high voltage V Q and the impedance 25 so that manual adjustment of the latter may be effected safely. The converged beams then pass between adjacent grid wires gp of a grid Gp and impinge on appropriate ones of a repeating series of vertically extending colour strips on the tube screen S and to ensure convergence throughout each horizontal scan a dynamic convergence correction voltage V 1 C having a parabolic waveform is generated by the integrating effect of an inductor 27 and capacitors 28 and 31 and combined with the static convergence correction voltage Vc so that the voltage between the deflecting plates = Vc+ Vc 1 . This voltage " stands-on " a high voltage V Q , produced by rectifying in circuit 22 the voltage across a further winding 13 on transformer 21 and provides a voltage Vp = V Q + Vc+Vc 1 which is connected to the deflecting plates P, P 1 the electron lens elements G 3 and G 5 and to the screen S by connection means (not shown) internal of the tube. An advantage of the arrangement is that when the voltage Vp varies due to tube current variations caused by variations in picture brightness the ratio Vc/Vp is unaltered so that the convergence remains unchanged. Another advantage is that since the high anode voltage Vp is derived from the sum of (two) lower voltages insulation requirements are not so stringent. Instead of being connected in series with the primary of transformer 23 the adjustable impedance 25 may be connected in shunt therewith (Fig. 3A not shown) and instead of an adjustable impedance a multi-contact switch connected-to taps on the primary winding may be employed (Fig. 3B, not shown). For the production of static convergence only, the inductor 27 and the capacitor 28 are omitted (Fig. 3C, not shown).
