    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound both in high yield and optical purity by feeding 4-(3'-chloro-5'-trifluoromethyl-2'-pyridyloxy)phenol with (2S)- chloropropionic acid and a dehydrohalogenating agent followed by carrying out reaction. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon solvent solution of 4-(3'-chloro-5'- trifluoromethyl-2'-pyridyloxy)phenol is refluxed at temperatures not lower than 40 deg.C but blow 80 deg.C under reduced pressure, and this system is fed with (2S)- chloropropionic acid and dehydrohalogenating agent (e.g. sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide) followed by carrying out dehydration reaction, thus obtaining the objective high-optical purity (2R)-2[4'-(3''-chloro-5''- trifluoromethyl-2''-pyridyloxy)phenoxy]propionic acid in high yield. The above method is optimal as a industrial production process with raw materials easily available. The present compound is useful as an intermediate for herbicides.
