Abstract: Provided is a priming mechanism for priming a biofluid drop ejection device having a drop ejection opening leading to an ejection reservoir. The priming mechanism includes a vacuum unit which generates a vacuum force, connected to a vacuum nozzle. The vacuum nozzle is located over the drop ejection opening. A disposable sleeve or tubing is attached to the vacuum nozzle and is placed in operational contact with the drop ejection opening. A fluid height detection sensor is positioned to sense a fluid height within at least one of the disposable tubing and the vacuum nozzle. Upon sensing a predetermined fluid height, by the fluid height detection sensor, the priming operation is completed, and the primer mechanism is removed from the operational contact with the drop ejection opening.

Abstract: A method of fabrication is provided for multi-step microlithographic structures including Fresnel lenses whereby the process includes the formati on of intermediate etch stop layers that are embedded with the structure material. This is accomplished in one aspect of the invention by depositing Fresnel lens material using known techniques and selectively altering the chemistry of the material bein g deposited to form the intermediate etch stop layers at suitable positions without interrupting the deposition process. In another aspect, etch stop layers are patterned on layers of the lens material and embedded between such layers. The structure, or lens, is then formed using masking, patterning and etching techniques.

Abstract: A droplet emitter with an array of droplet emitting devices constructed such that one flowing liquid is used to create the droplets while a second low acousti c impedance liquid can be used to both make the transfer of acoustic energy to the first liquid more efficient and help maintain a uniform temperature of the droplet emitter array. Both the emission fluid and the low acoustic impedance fluid can be circulated throug h the droplet emitter to allow for excess heat generated by control electronics to be transferred to the flowing. This prevents for instance excess heat build-up within the droplet emitter and allows for higher more accurate droplet emission.

The printhead further comprises a controller connected to the plurality of row switches and column switches, and a compensation network connected to the rows and/or columns of drop ejectors.
