    Abstract: A method of controlling deposits and/or improving the efficiency and/or improving the fuel economy in a direct injection spark ignition gasoline engine comprises adding into the gasoline to be combusted: (i) a detergent compound which is the reaction product of a carboxylic acid-derived acylating agent and an amine; and (ii) optionally, one or more additional components selected from: a) carrier oils comprising an optionally esterified polyether; b) polyetheramines; c) hydrocarbyl-substituted amines wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is substantially aliphatic and contains at least 8 carbon atoms; d) nitrogen-containing condensates of a phenol, aldehyde and primary or secondary amine; e) aromatic esters of a polyalkylphenoxyalkanol.

    Abstract: A diesel fuel composition comprising, as an additive, the product of a Mannich reaction between: (a) an aldehyde; (b) an amine; and (c) a substituted phenol; wherein the phenol is substituted with at least one branched hydrocarbyl group having a molecular weight of between 200 and 3000; and wherein in the Mannich reaction used to form the additive the molar ratio of component (a) to component (b) is 2.2-1.01:1; the molar ratio of component (a) to component (c) is 1.99-1.01:1 and the molar ratio of component (b) to component (c) is 1:1.01-1.99.
