A tire gel balancing composition having a Storage modulus of between 3000 and 15000 Pa and the Specific Gravity less than 1000 kg/m.sup.3 in the temperature range between -20.degree. and +90.degree. C., preferably its Storage modulus is about 9000 Pa, is capable of balancing tires by being able to flow under the vibrations caused by imbalance in a wheel assembly. The composition preferably comprises a mixture of: 1) paraffinic oils, polybutene oils, polyol esters, including castor oil, or polyol ethers; 2) hydrophobic or hydrophilic fumed silica; 3) polyalkyl-methacrylates, styrene-ethylene-propylene block copolymers or polyhydroxycarboxylic acid derivatives; and optionally corrosion inhibitors and antioxidants.
Abstract:
A grease composition for use as a cable filling material which contains about 75 to 95 parts by weight of a base component of a polyol or ester having a molecular weight of at least about 3000 and about 2 to 20 parts by weight of colloidal particles such as silica. Optionally, an antioxidant component can be added to impart high temperature resistance or a rubber component can be added to improve bleed resistance. Also, an article of manufacture of a cable having a sheath with one of the grease compositions of the invention located therein, and a method for filling the cable with such grease compositions.
Abstract:
Novel compositions useful as fluid gelling agents, especially for use in subterranean applications such as drilling fluids, are prepared by reacting an aqueous dispersion of a clay, such as bentonite, with an aqueous gel of a monodispersed mixed metal layered hydroxide of the formula Li.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+na) A.sub.a.sup.n, where D is a divalent metal, such as Mg, T is a trivalent metal, such as Al, and A represents other monovalent or polyvalent anions, the formula being described in detail in the disclosure.
Abstract:
A novel organophilic clay suspension medium prepared by admixing an organophilic clay with a hydrocarbon oil and an activator selected from the group consisting of phenyl hydroxyalkyl ethers and phenylalkanols. Optionally water may be added to the admixture for further improving the suspension medium.
Abstract:
Hydroxyfunctional carboxamide compounds of formula I ##STR1## are included in thixotropic formulations containing highly disperse silica as a thickening or thixotroping component in order to activate the silica or enhance its effect, to amerliorate any tendency of the silica to settle and/or to prevent weakening of the thixotroping effect of SiO.sub.2 in formulations which themselves form relatively strong hydrogen bonds. The compounds of formula I may be added to silica-containing thixotropic liquid formulations to improve the thixotropy, or highly disperse silica may be coated with such compounds for later incorporation into liquid systems to render them thixotropic.
Abstract:
An adhesive grease composition comprises a random copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin having the following formula ##STR1## wherein R represents a lower alkyl group, x and y are, respectively, an integer provided that x/y=0.5 to 2.0 and x+y=50 to 150, and a thickening agent in defined amounts.

Abstract:
The viscosity of liquid organic systems is increased by adding thereto an organophilic clay gellant which is the reaction product of a smectite-type clay having a cation exchange capacity of at least 75 milliequivalents per 100 grams of said clay and from 100 to 120 milliequivalents per 100 grams of clay of methyl or benzyl trialkyl ammonium salt, wherein the alkyl groups independently contain from 14 to 20 carbon atoms.
Abstract:
Known higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays can be surprisingly used as thixotropic agents in reinforced thermoset resins containing a major proportion of an unsaturated polyester and a minor proportion of styrene type monomer by employing a novel pregel process. In this process, the quaternary ammonium clay is pregelled in the styrene and the resulting pregel is then mixed with the unsaturated polyester to produce the final gel which is usually combined with glass fiber as a reinforcing agent for the production of thermoplastics. The novel clay gel compositions of the present invention have surprisingly advantageous properties, compared to the presently used fumed silica gel compositions.
