Abstract: The present invention adds a separate pilot pumping chamber and associated pumping plungers and cam followers axially offset from the main pumping chamber and pumping plungers. The axis of the pilot plunger bores is angularly offset from the axis of the main plunger bores so that the pilot plungers are actuated by a different set of cam lobes of the cam profile. This arrangement allows one pumping chamber to be refilled while the other pumping chamber is being discharged. A pilot injection event well in advance of the main injection can take place without refilling problems because each pumping chamber fills once for an injection event that includes a pilot and main injections. Discharge passages from the respective pumping chambers are ported to deliver the pilot and main fuel pulses to the same discharge port.

Abstract: A rotor that rotates in synchronization with an engine is provided inside a housing and a cam ring is provided outside and around the rotor so that plungers are caused to move reciprocally in the direction of the radius by the cam ring as the rotor rotates. At both sides of the cam ring, support members (barrel 8, bearing support member 6) constituted of the same material as that of the cam ring are secured to the housing and to both sides of the cam ring, and these support members alone hold the cam ring from both sides rotatably. A connecting rod connecting the cam ring and the timer mechanism is formed as an integrated part of the cam ring. The clearance between the cam ring and the members holding it can be set small so that the vibration of the cam ring is reduced to minimize the impact noise made by the cam ring and wear of the cam ring. In addition, the connection strength between the cam ring and timer mechanism is increased.

Abstract: In an inner cam type injection pump, the side surface of the protruding portion of each of the plungers facing the compression space is formed in a projecting shape in the area where the plunger changes from the base end side into the front end. Specific forms of the projection include a structure constituted with slanted surfaces over a plurality of stages with different inclinations relative to the axis of the plunger, an arc form and a structure provided with a overhanging portion formed on the side surface of the protruding portion, which does not overhang the base end, projecting out from the side surface. Abstract: A fuel supply apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine comprising a rotary distributor member having a delivery passage which can register in turn with outlet ports connected to the injection nozzles of the engine. Fuel is supplied to the delivery passage from an accumulator under the control of a valve. The accumulator is charged with fuel by means of a high pressure pump which is a cam actuated pump and fuel is supplied to the high pressure pump by a low pressure pump. A valve is provided to control the output pressure of the low pressure pump so that the amount of fuel supplied to the high pressure pump can be varied for the purpose of controlling the fuel pressure within the accumulator. This pressure is sensed by a transducer which supplies a signal to a control system which controls the flow of electric current in the valve.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump of the rotary distributor type includes a pumping element movable in a bore to displace fuel from the bore to the injection nozzles of an engine in turn. A regulator controls the supply of fuel to the bore and is responsive to the speed of the engine and the setting of a control lever coupled to the accelerator pedal of a vehicle driven by the engine. The pump also includes valve means which is opened when the engine speed is above a predetermined value and the accelerator pedal has been released by the vehicle driver. The valve means when open prevents the supply of fuel to the engine and as the engine speed falls closes at a predetermined speed to restore the supply of fuel.
