Abstract: Reaction between formaldehyde and a prim. arylamine (pref. aniline) in the presence of a catalyst (pref. HCl) is improved by admixing formaldehyde in a first mixing stage to the other reaction participants, which are continuously circulated through an outside cooler to avoid local overheating due to the exothermal reaction and achieve a more uniform distribution of formaldehyde. Only very small quantities of catalyst are needed e.g. 0.1-3 mol.% and it is easily recovered.
