Abstract:
A noise generator for generating multi-octave, high-level, millimeter- and submillimeter-wave noise is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the invention, the noise generator includes: a microwave noise source; a microwave power-amplifier chain; a level-set attenuator; a frequency multiplier; and a transmission structure. The output of the generator has a high-intensity noise power spectrum over a frequency range from about 60 GHz to about 1 THz. This type of noise is particularly suited and has sufficient power for testing and calibrating millimeter- and submillimeter-wave components, devices, and circuits; material evaluation and characterization; and for use as a broadband millimeter- and submillimeter-wave noise source for a Fourier Transform Spectrometer.
Abstract:
An automated inspection system for detecting digestive contaminants on food items as they are being processed for consumption includes a conveyor for transporting the food items, a light sealed enclosure which surrounds a portion of the conveyor, with a light source and a multispectral or hyperspectral digital imaging camera disposed within the enclosure. Operation of the conveyor, light source and camera are controlled by a central computer unit. Light reflected by the food items within the enclosure is detected in predetermined wavelength bands, and detected intensity values are analyzed to detect the presence of digestive contamination.
Abstract:
Novel nanowell microarrays are disclosed in optical contact with polymer waveguides wherein evanescent field associated with lightwaves propagated in the waveguide excite target substances in the nanowells either by a common waveguide or by individual waveguides. Fluid samples are conveyed to the nanowells by means of microfluidics. The presence of the target substances in fluid samples is detected by sensing fluorescent radiation generated by fluorescent tag bound to the target substances. The fluorescent tags generate fluorescent radiation as a result of their excitation by the evanescent field. One or more PMT detectors or a CCD detector are located at the side of the waveguide opposite to the nanowells. Fluorescent radiation is detected due to its coupling with the waveguide or its emission through the waveguide.

An angularly multiplexed store contains filters derived from prior examination of input image reference samples, a spectrum analyzer produces spectral data representing the frequency spectrum of the input image under examination, a computer produces an encoded map of the spectral data representing the input image frequency spectrum. The encoded map is transformed, inputted into the store while close match spectral correlation light beams emerge from the multiplexed store, each having an emerging angle associated with that filter within the multiplexed store producing a close match with the first transform. An array of light beam detectors and a display present images having colors that indicate the nature of the input image such as a type of cancer. An associated memory-retro-reflector arrangement displays characters naming the materials making up the input image such as types of abnormal tissue. The disclosed apparatus can have significant application in medicine, food industry, spectroscopy, material science and other various areas.
Abstract:
A particle analyzer in which tagged particles to be analyzed are drawn through a suspended capillary tube where a predetermined volume in the capillary tube is illuminated. The illumination scattered by said particles is detected by a detector to count all particles. The fluorescent illumination emitted by tagged particles is detected and the output signals from the fluorescent detectors and scatter detector are processed to provide an analysis of the particles.

In a method of analyzing wavelength-division multiplexed signal light, a plurality of reference wavelengths (nullC1-nullCm) as preliminary specified by the ITU-T standards are stored in a memory; then, maximum points of light intensity are determined from waveform data obtained by measuring an actual wavelength-division multiplexed optical spectrum; any one of the maximum points which at least differs in light intensity from the two minimum points, one being right to said maximum point and the other being left, by a channel identifying threshold (TH) level or more is identified as a channel, and the wavelength of the identified channel is determined as nullDn; then, the nullDn for each channel is rounded to the value of the nearest ITU-T grid wavelength nullCm so as to determine the reference wavelength nullAn for each channel and the determined reference wavelengths nullAn are stored in the memory.

A reference wavelength light generating apparatus is disclosed in which light emitted from a light source is branched by a light branching unit, one of the branched lights is extracted as a measuring beam and the other is extracted as reference wavelength light by passing through a collimator and an absorbing member and then being reflected by a reflecting member to return to the branching unit.
