    Abstract: The identification system for bodies containing luminous or fluorescent material uses an induction radiation source for directing this onto a body in the testing station. The luminous material is induced to emit light radiation which in the event of different wave lengths is picked up at the same time by numerous optical systems (24, 25, 26) and passed to relevant photodetectors (18, 19, 20). Each optical system is associated with an optical filter (21, 22, 23) so as to transfer to the associated photodetector a different selected wavelength or range of wavelengths from those wavelengths which are sent to a different photodetector. Each photodetector produces an output signal which linearly changes its level according to the intensity of the emitted light ray which falls on this. The signal level of a photodetector is altered by attenuation or amplification and the altered signal level is compared with the signal level derived from a different photodetector.

    Abstract: In a spectrophotometer, light that has passed through, or been reflected from, a sample is carried by a fiberoptic bundle. The output end of the fiberoptic bundle is bonded to one side of a wedge-shaped linear variable interference filter. The other side of the filter is bonded to an array of photodiodes. Because each photodiode receives light that has passed through a different portion of the filter, each photodiode will respond to light of a different wavelength.

    Abstract: 1498207 Gas analysis using photo-detectors SEARLE CARDIO-PULMONARY SYSTEMS Inc 28 Nov 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 48988/75 Heading G1A [Also in Division H1D] A gas analyzer for determining the composition of a patients breath comprises a discharge chamber 16, Fig. 1, provided with electrodes 17, 19 to excite the gases and with pipes 12, 22 connecting the ends of the chamber respectively to a patients breathing tube 6 and a subatmospheric pressure; the chamber is surrounded by a set of photodetectors 31 (only one shown in Fig. 1) each having a filter 56 so that it responds only to a particular gas in the chamber. Helium can be used as an exciter for the other gases, but if the apparatus dimensions are selected and the flow-rate is not too high the helium is unnecessary or can be used simply as a carrier. The preferred dimensions are: chamber diameter, 10-30mm; inlet pipe bore 1-2mm; outlet pipe bore 3À2-6À4mm; flow-rate 10cc/min. The electrodes may be fitted with molybdenum faces 15, 20, Fig. 3 to reduce oxidation, and the use of glass or ceramic tubes 57, 58 reduces sputtering. The chamber is fitted with a shield 61 having collimating apertures 59 which allow light to pass via the filters 56 to photo-multiplier within shields 54.

    Abstract: An alloy to be tested is formed of a basis metal and a plurality of alloying elements. A diffraction spectrum having lines corresponding to the basis metal and to each of the alloying elements is generated from the alloy by sparking and electrical signals each having an intensity proportional to the intensity of a respective one of the lines of the spectrum are formed. Each of these signals is integrated and the integrated signals corresponding to lines of the alloy elements are each compared with the integrated signal corresponding to the line of the basis metal and difference signals are generated. These difference signals are evaluated by being passed through a threshold circuit which sounds an alarm when they lie outside a predetermined range. The device can be calibrated by comparing each of the signals corresponding to one of the alloying elements with only a portion of the signal corresponding to the basis metal so that the arrangement can be set up to generate an output only when the alloy being sampled has a composition different from a predetermined calibrated composition.

    Abstract: A scannable detector system for echelle grating spectrometers is disclosed in which a photodetector is positioned behind an aperture plate having a plurality of apertures corresponding to focal positions of the spectral array eminating from the grating. The detector is arranged to scan from aperture to aperture to measure the presence of individual wavelengths in the array. Additionally, the detector may be removed from the field of the plate to permit the substitution of a non-scannable array of detectors and an associated masking aperture plate to simultaneously measure the presence of a plurality of wavelengths in the spectral array.
