Abstract:
A magnetic recording medium having two magnetic layers, which comprises an upper magnetic layer and a lower magnetic layer, said lower magnetic layer having a coercive force of at least 100 oersteds, preferably 100 to 500 oersteds, lower than that of the upper magnetic layer, the thickness of the upper and lower magnetic layers being in the ratio of the thickness of the upper magnetic layer to that of the lower magnetic layer of 1/1 to 1/9, and the total coercive force of the upper and lower magnetic layers being 1,000 oersteds or more. The magnetic recording medium has excellent sensitivity and frequency characteristics at low and high frequency bands with less noise.
Abstract:
Polyurethanes prepared from hydroxyl terminated polymers, organic diisocyanates and polyethers having terminal hydroxyl and unsaturated groups of terminal hydroxyl and pendant unsaturated groups, are soluble in solvents for deposition on a carrier that after removal of the solvent can be wound and processed as by calendaring and slitting immediately after removal from a solvent drying oven without layer to layer adhesion or other disruption of the coating. After such processing, the binder compositions containing the polyurethane may be crosslinked or cured in a few seconds by electron beam radiation to provide an improved stable coating. These polyurethanes combined with phenoxy resins form particularly useful binder systems for magnetic tape.
Abstract:
A magnetic recording medium suitable for high-density recording which comprises a substrate and a magnetic layer thereon, said magnetic layer containing acicular magnetic metal particles having a particle size of not more than 0.3µ and a squareness ratio in the vertical direction of said layer being not less than 0.4.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a magnetic recording medium including a substrate carrying a coating of magnetic particles and non-magnetic load-bearing spherical particles dispersed in a binder. The spherical particles protrude above the surface of the magnetic coating. The particles do not protrude above the surface of the magnetic coating by more than 1/5th of the thickness of said coating.
Abstract:
A magnetic recording element with a carrier and a magnetic coating which comprises a magnetic pigment dispersed in a binder in which the sulphate ions present on the surface of the pigment particles are bound in the form of a water-insoluble salt, as well as methods of manufacturing the magnetic recording element in which the magnetic pigment or a non-magnetic FeOOH pigment from which the magnetic pigment can be manufactured is treated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble compound the cations of which form water-insoluble salts with the sulphate ions present on the surface of the pigment particles and the treated pigment is then processed according to known methods to a magnetic recording element or in which the above-mentioned compound is mixed with the ingredients of the magnetic coating and the resulting magnetic coating lacquer is provided on a carrier and dried.
Abstract:
Novel phosphorylated compositions of a vinyl chloride copolymer or terpolymer, a phenoxy resin, a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate-lactone adduct or a reaction product of a normally solid pendant-hydroxyl-containing thermoplastic polymer having at least 8 hydroxyl groups per molecular chain and an adduct which is the product of either a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate or a lactone-acrylate adduct and an organic diisocyanate having improved dispersion characteristics suitable for use in applications such as magnetic recording media.
