    Abstract: Apparatus for sensing overheated electrical insulation through the detection of thermoparticulates in a dynamoelectric machine's cooling gas system is disclosed. The cooling gas as it circulates will entrain thermoparticulates produced in the system when there is overheating. This gaseous carrier is then withdrawn and conducted to an ionization chamber where it is ionized. Downstream from the ionization chamber there is placed a first ion collector for collecting ions with relatively small radii. A second ion collector which is biased for collecting ions with relatively large radii is also placed downstream from the ionization chamber. By comparison of ion current from the first ion collector with ion current from the second ion collector it is possible to detect the presence of thermoparticulates in the cooling gas relatively independent of gas pressure, flow rate through the monitor, and effectiveness of the radiation source.

    Abstract: 1509189 Radio-active sources ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 8 Aug 1975 [13 July 1974] 31141/74 Heading G6R A beta particle-emitting radio-active source for use in an ionization detector comprises a radio-active tritiated carrier coated with a thin layer of a low density material -which is non- radio-active and is not affected by radiation from a radio-active source. The carrier may be a layer of titanium supported on a copper or stainless steel foil. The coating material may be aluminium of thickness less than 1 micron. In the detector shown, the radio-active source 6 is in the form of a cylindrical sleeve arranged between electrodes 1, 2, gas being introduced at 4 and leaving at 5. The coating reduces the energy of the beta particles emitted and also reduces tritium loss at elevated temperature.

    Abstract: 1504741 Ionization detectors RADIOCHEMICAL CENTRE Ltd 21 Jan 1976 [28 Jan 1975] 3742/75 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] An ionization detector, e.g. an electron capture detector for gas analysis, comprises two electrodes across a gas passage and a radio-active source of Fe 5 5 emitting electrons to ionize the gas. Auger electrons of approx. 5À5 KeV from Fe 5 5 will produce the same ion current as a weaker conventional Ni 63 beta source (67keV) but the more numerous electrons give improved signal to noise statistics. In a cylindrical chamber with wall cathode 22, central rod anode 20 and insulating - e.g.Bn-ends 16, 18, Fe containing Fe 55 is co-deposited with 20-30% Ni on the inner wall to an activity of 1-15mCi, the alloy tolerating up to 300‹C in use. Up to 150V may be applied between the electrodes in an electron capture detector or 300V in a crosssection detector, either continuously or pulsed, e.g. 8Ás in every 80Ás, or pulse frequency modulated to maintain constant current, drawing ion current of the order of 1nA. Electron absorption by fluorinated or chlorinated hydrocarbon in 10 -10 concentration in air causes a detectable current fall of a few pA, with signal/noise e.g. 64 and 17 respectively.

    Abstract: An ionization detecting fire alarm device that comprises a double chamber structure, a source disposed in at least one of the chambers and a vernier adjusting screw electrode protruding into one chamber. The chamber containing the adjustable electrode is more open to the atmosphere than the other chamber. Porting is provided between chambers and detection occurs by sensing the rate of change of ionization current in the chamber structure. The source or sources, one being in each chamber, is a beta source such as a nickel 63 source. A change in ionization current is detected by a unique circuit of this invention which comprises a programmable unijunction transistor oscillator circuit.
