Abstract:
@ A disposable package (8) comprising a plastic container (10) secured to plastic protective and support member (32, 34) so that the container (10) may be supported in a vertical position during shipment and commercial storage and in a horizontal position, such as refrigerator shelf, for consumer use. In the preferred embodiment, the container (10) contains a desired quantity of beer. The container (10) is provided with dispensing means (22) having means (26) movable between at least two positions so that in the first position there is no passageway between the fluid inside the container (10) and the outside of the container and in a second position wherein the beer in the container may be readily dispensed in separate portions over a period of time without degradation of the quality of the remaining portions of beer in the container (10). Means (30) are also provided to control the rate at which beer is dispensed from the container.
Abstract:
A doming assembly (100) for doming the bottom wall (114) of a can body (110). A bodymaker punch (120) urges a can bottom wall (114) first against a forming ring (140) and then against a domer die (180). The forming ring (140) forms an outer annular portion (203) of a dome (201) and the domer die (180) forms a central portion (208) of a dome (201) in the can bottom wall (114). The sequential engagement of the can bottom wall (114) by first the forming ring (140), then the domer die (180) prevents flower dome formation and axial can body shortening.
Abstract:
A continuous processing system for performing production operations on a plurality of unit products using at least two discrete processing machines including: an upstream processing machine (12); a downstream processing machine (22); an accumulator (32) for transferring unit products (11) between the upstream machine and downstream machine and for accumulating unit products in tightly packed continuously touching relationship (62) in a variable length area starting at a position (36) adjacent the downstream machine and extending toward (34) the upstream machine, the number of unit products in the tightly packed continuously touching relationship defining a continuous-fill-accumulation; account-in center (52) for sensing each unit product entering the accumulator; account-out center (54) for sensing each unit product exiting from the accumulator; a computer software accumulator model (200) for operating on data derived from the sensor signal and from physical characteristics of the accumulator for continuously predicting the continuous-fill-accumulation; and machine speed control apparatus (40) for continuously bearably controlling the speed of the upstream machine and/or the downstream machine based on the predicted continuous-fill-accumulation.

Abstract:
A milk carton blank (10) formable into a liquid tight parallelepiped shaped milk carton (20). The milk carton blank (10) comprises a generally rectangular shape having a plurality of panel portions (70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 85, 86, 87) formed by a gridwork of longitudinal (32, 34, 36, 38) and transverse (42, 44) fold lines. Cutout portions (91, 92, 93, 94) in oppositely positioned top and bottom panel portions allow the top and bottom panel portions to be folded and sealed with a relatively small number of operations. A perforated tab portion is described which may be removed from a tongue portion of the milk carton to provide a pouring spout. Additional folding lines are described which allow a portion of a top and lateral side panel of the milk carton to be thrust outwardly to facilitate pouring of liquid therefrom.
Abstract:
A container end member is provided and has a first severable tab portion which is defined by a score line groove and has an integral hinge portion for permanently securing it to the container end member and a force applying tab portion permanently pivotally mounted on the container end member and used to apply a force on the first severable tab portion to form a pour opening in the container end member and a second severable tab portion having an integral hinge portion for permanently securing it to the container end member and having a raised surface projecting outwardly from the container end member so that a force may be applied thereto to sever the second severable tab portion and form a vent opening in the container end member.
Abstract:
A redraw apparatus (16) is provided for a can body making apparatus wherein the redraw carriage (40) of the redraw apparatus (16) is mounted for substantially friction-free sliding reciprocating movement over a pair of spaced apart support posts (70, 72) which are fixedly mounted on the housing (18) holding the can forming and ironing dies. Also, a counterbalancing system (110) is provided for applying a force to counterbalance the weight of a portion of structures used to reciprocate the redraw carriage (40). Additionally, a ram assembly (150) is provided for supporting a ram (262) for movement through the redraw apparatus (16) and the can forming and ironing dies wherein a pair of spaced apart elongated shafts (154, 156) are fixedly mounted and a ram carriage (170) having the ram (262) attached thereto is provided with liquid bearings (180, 182) using liquid coolant comprising water having solubles contained therein for mounting the ram carriage (170) on the elongated shafts (154, 156) for substantially friction free movement thereover. A guide liquid bearing (272) is also used to ensure proper alignment of the ram (262). Also disclosed is a reciprocating ram (1014) which is supported solely by a liquid bearing (1030) wherein the liquid bearing (1030) using liquid coolant comprising water having solubles contained therein has a sufficient length to ensure the proper alignment of the leading portion (1020) of the elongated ram (1014) as it engages a can blank in a redraw assembly (1010) and moves it through the forming and ironing dies to form an elongated can body.
