Abstract: 481,516. Cathode-ray tubes. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and GILBERT, A. H. Sept. 11, 1936, No. 24809: [Class 39 (i)] The invention relates to magnetic electron beam deflecting systems of the type comprising an open ferro-magnetic core 5 carrying windings 4 through which a varying electric current passes, the limbs of the core embracing the electron discharge device in which a deflecting field is to be produced. In order that the deflecting field may increase in linear relation to time, at least one short-circuited winding 6 surrounds the core. The coupling between the coils 4, 6 may be varied by altering the position of the coil 6, which may have from one to four turns of resistance wire so that its L : R ratio is low. A short circuited coil may be placed near the end of each limb. According to the Provisional Specification, the shortcircuited coil may be of low resistance.

Abstract: 479,935. Valve generating circuits. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., JOHNSTONE, D. M., and JONES, V. July 13, 1936, Nos. 19355 and 27286. [Class 40 (v)] A frequency-divider is so constructed as to produce a definite phase relation between the original current of basic frequency and the derived current of submultiple frequency. To this end the original impulses from the source are applied to a transmission channel and also to a known frequency-divider, the output of which is used to switch the transmission channel on and off so that some impulses coming from the source are suppressed while others are transmitted so as to form a sequence of impulses at the submultiple frequency, Fig. 1 (not shown). In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the original current is applied to the grid of valve 8 and the submultiple current is taken off the anode circuit at 12. Alternate impulses are suppressed by switching-impulses derived from the valve 10, which is controlled through a delay network 9. The switching-impulses may, however, be made long enough to suppress a larger proportion of impulses so that the frequency may be divided by a factor greater than 2. In the switching-device shown in Fig. 3, the valve 14 is back-coupled so that it is capable of oscillating when condenser 15 has been charged to a sufficient potential through the resistance or constant-current device 16, whereupon the condenser 15 is discharged through the valve 14. The original impulses consist of trains of high-frequency oscillations applied to the screening grid at 21, but alternate impulses, or some other proportion of impulses, are suppressed by the condenser potential not having acquired a sufficient value. The potential of condenser 15 is applied through a differentiating circuit 19, 20 to a valve 10. This valve switches a transmission device to which also the source impulses are applied. The transmission device may comprise a fourelectrode valve in which the switching-impulses are applied to the screen grid while the original impulses are applied to the control grid, Fig. 1, Provisional (not shown). Where the original impulses are television synchronizing signals, the derived impulses may be mixed with impulses derived from the A.C. mains and employed for control purposes as described in Specification. 472,686, [Group XXXV]. In a further modification, the transmitted impulses may be derived by submultiplication from impulses which have themselves been derived by multiplication from the switching-impulses.

[Class 40 (v)] In a receiver particularly for short waves mistuning due to variation of grid bias is corrected by simultaneous re tuning. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the bias control 1 is ganged to a trimmer condenser 4. In the case where automatic gain control is employed variation of the oscillator frequency may be produced by electrical means such as those used in automatic tuning.

Abstract: 476,437. Fluorescent screens. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., HODGSON, B., and WILLIAMS, W. O. June 8, 1936, No. 16031. [Class 98 (i)] Finely divided material is fixed to the wall of an electron-discharge device by applying the material to the wall, for example in a binding of waterglass, potassium silicate or silicon ester, baking the material thereon and then pouring on to the surface thus prepared a weak solution of water glass, potassium silicate or silicon ester, removing the surplus solution and again baking until the surface is dry. In an example for producing the fluorescent screen of a cathode-ray tube, the binding material is applied first to the screen and the fluorescent material then applied as a dry powder, emulsion or colloidal solution, whereupon the screen is baked until dry at a temperature of 100 to 200‹ C. A weak solution of waterglass is then poured on, excess is removed and the screen baked for ten minutes at 200‹ C. Specification 402,411 is referred to.

Abstract: 475,100. Photo - electric devices. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and DENISOFF, A. K. May 12, 1936, No. 13428. [Class 39 (i)] In electron-discharge devices having an electron-emitting electrode activated by light or the impact of other electrons, the surface consists of a layer of silver telluride upon which is deposited a further layer comprising a compound of tellurium and a photo-electrically sensitive metal such as caesium. In the discharge device shown a semi-cylindrical silver plate 4 is carried by two steel tubes 3, slidable on rods 2, secured in the pinch of the envelope 1, and coacts with a rod-like electrode 5. The plate is moved by magnetic means to a position opposite a lateral branch 6 of the envelope in which is an open-ended tube containing tellurium which is heated so as to deposit on the plate. Excess is withdrawn through the connection 7, and the plate moved back to its position opposite the electrode 5. Caesium vapour is then admitted through the tube 8, and the device subjected to a time-temperature cycle. It is then cooled and sealed.

Abstract: 475,047. Cathode-ray tubes. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., JONES, V., and WILLANS, P. W. May 11, 1936, No. 13302. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge tube has a storage grid and an equipotential grid which is parallel and in close proximity to the storage grid and is at a high potential with respect to the cathode, and a wide homogeneous electron beam is adapted to pass through both grids and be modulated to a varying extent over its cross-section by the storage grid, the modulating potentials on the various elements of which vary in accordance with an electron or optical image. The mosaic elements of the storage grid may be photo-electrically or photoconductively or photo-voltaically active. Means may be provided for discharging the potentials on the mosaic elements.. The elements may be mounted through high-resistance material on a conductor, the potential of which extinguishes the electron beam when the storage grid is not illuminated. Alternatively, an intermittent or continuous electron beam may be used. The storage grid may be negatively biassed with respect to the cathode, but when it is photo-voltaically active it may be at a small positive potential. The storage grid may not be light-sensitive and the potentials thereon are then generated by impinging electrons produced by a photo-cathode, on which the image is projected, or by a scanning cathoderay modulated by television &c. signals. The mosaic elements may be charged positively due to secondary emission or negatively. The scanning ray may impinge on an auxiliary electrode, electrons from which are accelerated and focused on to the storage electrode. In one form, an image 1, Fig. 1, is focused on to a storage grid 3 which controls a homogeneous beam generated from a plane cathode 4 which may be indirectly-heated or photo-electric. The beam passes through the equipotential grid 6 to the fluorescent screen 5. The grid 6 may be on either side or on both sides of the storage grid. Electric or magnetic focusing and accelerating means may be provided between the electrodes 3, 4 and 5, 6. In another form, an image 2, Fig. 2, is focused onto a photocathode 7 from which electrons are focused on to the storage grid 3. In a further form, the storage grid is scanned by a modulated beam from a gun 8, Fig. 3, which may be on either side of the grid 3 or arranged so that the beam passes through an aperture in the cathode 4. The invention may be applied to iconoscopes or image dissectors.
