[Class 40 (v)] The input to a receiver comprises a dipole aerial of dimensions appropriate to the carrier frequency to be received associated with a transmission line forming a tuned circuit and connected directly to the first valve of the receiver. The Figure shows a dipole 1 connected to a frequency changer 5 by a line 2 including a filter 3 adapted to reject signals of frequency of the order of the intermediate frequency. The filter impedance matches that of the line and the line is terminated by an impedance substantially equal to the characteristic impedance of the line.

A focussing coil 7, which may be partly surrounded by an iron shield, surrounds the neck between the extension 5 and the gun and magnetic deflecting means 8 surround the neck between the extension and the bulb. If electrostatic deflecting means are used the leads therefrom may pass out through the pinch 6. A fluorescent screen 2 is on the-bulb.

The coils 1 may be made to conform to the neck 2 of a cathode-ray tube and are arranged within a ferro-magnetic cylinder 3, which is divided by two axial slots into two substantially equal semi-cylindrical parts, which are electrically insulated from one another. The cylinder 3 may take the form of small rectangles of ferro-magnetic material fastened to an adhesive tape and arranged round the device 2. The cylinder may be of such length as to include wholly the coils 1 or may be of the length shown. It is preferably formed of high permeability material, such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Mumetal."

[Class 40 (v)] A reactive thermionic valve apparatus for detecting and amplifying modulated or interrupted carrier wave signals comprises a pentode 1 (suppressor grid not shown) biassed to operate as a detector and having its control grid and cathode connected to tappings on an inductance 4, one end of which is earthed, the anode being connected through a condenser 8 to the control grid of a further valve 9 and to earth through a condenser 7 which has a very low impedance for the signal carrier frequency and a high impedance for the demodulated signals. Variable operating potential for the screen grid is provided by connecting it to an adjustable contact on the potentiometer 5, this grid being also connected to earth through a condenser 11 which presents a low impedance for the carrier frequency.
