Abstract:
A method of waste disposal is described which comprises initiating a zone of oxidation by combining a source of elemental phosphorus and an oxygen-containing gas, within a protective layer of an inert, non-flammable fluid (such as water). The non-flammable fluid protects the elemental phosphorus from otherwise contacting atmospheric oxygen so that the elemental phosphorus is oxidized within the protective layer by the oxygen-containing gas thereby providing a zone of high temperature oxidation to incinerate the waste (e.g., a chemical waste).
Abstract:
Dialkylphenylphosphonates are prepared by the reaction of a metal alkoxide with a phenyl phosphonic dihalide. The reactants are combined to give a temperature rise to 60°C within 15 minutes, resulting in improved yields and assay of product.
Abstract:
A method for the preparation of a solid, phytoactive composition comprising: (a) reacting an acid form of a phytoactive N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxylmethyl compound with a liquid amine to form the amine salt of said N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxylmethyl compound; (b) admixing said amine salt of said N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxylmethyl compound with a molten surfactant, the surfactant being solid at ambient temperatures; and (c) cooling said mixture to a temperature below the melting point of the surfactant to form a composition comprising said surfactant and said amine salt of N-phosphonomethyl-N-carboxylmethyl compound interdispersed in the matrix thereof and which is solid at ambient temperatures.
Abstract:
Tin tetra-alkoxides absent halogenic impurities are prepared by a two-step process comprising a first step reaction of tin tetrahalide with an alcohol and ammonia. A second step reacts the product of the first step with a metal amide and additional alcohol. An alternative second step reacts the product of the first step with a metal alkoxide.
Abstract:
Racemic mixtures of partially water-soluble esters defined by the formula wherein R and R 1 represent hydrogen and C,-C 4 alkyl; R 2 represents C 1 -C 4 alkyl and X represents halogen, aliphatic or aromatic groups and substituted derivatives thereof wherein R, R 1 and X are different can be resolved by reducing the water solubility of a racemic mixture of said esters by means other than changing the chemical composition of the ester, contacting the racemic mixture of esters of reduced water solubility with a lipase enzyme from Candida cylindracea capable of stereospecifically resolving the racemic mixture by hydrolysis and stereospecifically resolving the racemic mixture.
