Abstract: 5714. Stewart, J. K. March 7. Speed-indicator transmission mechanism.-To avoid the irregularities in the rotation of the driving-shaft of a speed indicator upon a motor-cycle, due to the resilient mounting of the front forks 1 and the consequent up-and-down movement of the pinion 5 on the driving- member 4, a compensating-device is introduced between the lower end of the flexible shaft and the driving-pinion, consisting of a rod 10, which telescopes in a tube 11 connected to the flexible shaft 16. Connexion between the parts 10 and 11 is effected by a pin 12 on the part 10 engaging in a spiral slot 13 in the part 11, the direction of the spiral being arranged to counteract the rotation of the part 11 due to the vertical movement of the pinion. The lower part of the outer tube 14 telescopes in a tube 14 attached to the gear casing 8. The rod 10 is driven through bevel and spur gearing from the spur-wheel 4.

Abstract: 13,997. Stewart, J. G. June 15. Branches and mains, connecting.-The end of a branch-pipe nipple 4 is provided with lugs 5, which are passed through slots 3 of a corresponding hole in the main and are engaged by a partial rotation, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 3. A saddle-piece 6, conforming to the surface of the main, is placed over the nipple and held in place by a nut 10, the joint being made good by packing 9, 11 housed in suitable recesses. The branch pipe is then connected to the nipple by a screw-threaded connecting- piece 12. The lugs 5 may be replaced by a triangular, square, or other flange, the hole in the main being made to correspond.

Abstract: 6491. Cleland, J., and Stewart, J. C. March 24. [Patent of Addition to No. 13,077, A.D. 1906.] Steam traps.-In a steam trap of the type described in Specification No. 13,077, A.D. 1906, the expansion tube a has at one end a coupling d for connexion to a steam-pipe, and at the other end a similar coupling which carries the valve seat c and the fulcrum of a lever i, the two couplings being connected by a non-expansible rod e, so that when the tube expands the fulcrum moves, and an adjustable non-expansible rod f causes the lever i to close the valve p. This valve can be seen through a lateral discharge opening, and its spindle passes through a stuffing-box t separated from the valve. A hand-lever k has a projection m, which, when the lever is turned through 90 degrees, rests in a groove n in the lever i and releases the valve, allowing the trap to blow through.

Abstract: 13,049. Stewart, J. K. June 5. Clutches.-(1) The driven pinion 7d is provided with two ratchet teeth 7 which engage a spring- pressed pin 7 on the hub of the siren wheel 4, thus enabling the pinion to rotate the siren wheel in one direction, while permitting the siren wheel to run faster than the pinion in the same direction. (2) The first gear-wheel 15 has on one side a ratchet crown 15 , with which engages a spring- pressed segmental rack 14 mounted on the pedal lever 14.

Abstract: 13,077. Cleland, J., and Stewart, J. C. June 6. Steam traps.-Relates to improvements in steam traps of the type described in Specification No. 25,612, A.D. 1899. The outer end of the inner tube or rod h abuts against one end of a bent lever j, the other arm of which is connected by an adjustable tie-rod k to a projection k on the casing. This rod acts to force the valve k on to its seating when the outer tube a expands. A screw q, which may be fitted with a saddle-piece r, enables the tube h to be sprung aside to allow steam to pass through the trap. In a modification, Fig. 4, an additional tube m, acting upon levers o which pivot against a piece h , by its expansion assists to close the valve. An additional tie-rod k with or without a separate lever j may be fitted. The valve opening c' may also be made larger than the passage c which admits the water, the coupling b being then tapered as shown.
