Abstract: Three-dimensional polymeric article (100) having first (101) and second (102) opposed major surfaces, a base body (103) having a first dimension, a second dimension perpendicular to the first dimension, and a thickness, wherein the thickness is orthogonal to the first and second dimensions, wherein the base body (103) comprises a plurality of alternating, adjacent first (107) and second (108) polymeric regions along the first dimension, wherein the second dimensions of the first (107) and second (108) regions extend at least partially across the second dimensions, wherein the first regions (107) have a first crosslink density, wherein the second regions (108) have a second crosslink density, wherein the second crosslink density of the second regions (108) are less than the first crosslink density of the first regions (107), wherein the first and second regions extend perpendicularly in two directions from a central plane (115) in the base body (103) parallel to the first and second dimensions of the polymeric article (100), and wherein the second regions (108) extend in each of said two directions further than does the first regions (107). Embodiments of the three-dimensional polymeric article described herein are useful for providing a dual sided, textured wrapping film such that greater grip is realized both on an item wrapped by the film and the wrapped item itself.

Abstract: A biological sterilization indicator, system, and methods of determining the effectiveness of a sterilization process. The biological sterilization indicator can include a locus of spores, a reservoir containing a liquid, and a sterilant path positioned to provide fluid communication between ambience and the locus of spores. The reservoir can have a closed state in which the reservoir is not in fluid communication with the locus of spores and an open state in which the reservoir is in fluid communication with the locus of spores. The biological sterilization indicator system can include the biological sterilization indicator and a detection device adapted to be coupled to the biological sterilization indicator. In some embodiments, the method can include assaying the spores for a detectable change in a characteristic, and detecting substantially all of the detectable change.

Abstract: Systems and methods for concentrating a sample and detecting an analyte of interest. The system can include a sample detection container that can include a microcavity. The microcavity can include a top opening, a base, and a longitudinal axis. The container can further include a wall that extends to the microcavity, wherein at least a portion of the wall located adjacent the top opening of the microcavity has a slope that is oriented at an effective angle α with respect to the longitudinal axis of the microcavity. The effective angle α can be greater than 45 degrees and less than 90 degrees, and at least the portion of the wall located adjacent the top opening of the microcavity that is oriented at the effective angle α can have a length of at least 5 times a transverse dimension of the microcavity.

Abstract: Film articles with dual-sided structures are ones in which both of the major surfaces of the film have a structured surface. The structured film articles have a first major surface and second major surface, where each surface has a plurality of spaced apart protrusions forming a repeating pattern. Each repeating pattern has a major axis, where the major axis is one of the major axes in the translational direction of the repeating pattern. The major axis of the repeating pattern on the second major surface forms an oblique angle with the major axis on the first major surface, where the angle is in the range of 10-90% of the angle of rotational symmetry of the repeating pattern. The structured film is a unitary substrate. The structured film articles are prepared by providing a flowable material composition having two major surfaces and simultaneously contacting the major surfaces with a first microstructuring tool, and a second microstructuring tool. Each microstructuring tool has a structured surface including a pattern of a plurality of depressions.

Abstract: A substantially planar self-folding film assembly to generate a folded three-dimensional assembly. The assembly includes a flexible support substrate, adhesive elements, and folding members. The folding members include a base, a folding region, and a hinge adjacent each folding region attached at the base to the flexible support substrate by at least one of the adhesive elements. An array of polymer actuators is co-extensive, or shaped to be not co-extensive, with each of the flexible folding members. Upon activation by a patterned light to heat conversion layer, each polymer actuator is designed and configured to provide a displacement of the corresponding flexible folding member about each hinge.

Abstract: Films and articles are described comprising a microstructured surface having an array of peak structures and adjacent valleys. For improved cleanability, the valleys preferably have a maximum width ranging from 10 microns to 250 microns and the peak structures have a side wall angle greater than 10 degrees. The peak structures may comprise two or more facets such as in the case of a linear array of prisms or an array of cube-corners elements. The facets form continuous or semi-continuous surfaces in the same direction. The valleys typically lack intersecting walls. Also described are methods of making and methods of use. The microstructured surface of the article can be prepared by various microreplication techniques such as coating, injection molding, embossing, laser etching, extrusion, casting and curing a polymerizable resin; and bonding microstructured film to a surface or article with an adhesive.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides articles including an adhesive layer; a film layer bonded to the adhesive layer having a microstructured surface including numerous capillary channels; and a cover layer disposed on the capillary channels and attached to the adhesive layer.
