Abstract: A surgical console is disclosed for simulating surgical procedures. Simulations can be directly integrated and supported by the surgical console and training surgical instruments. An operator may use actual control hardware to manipulate the surgical instruments that will be manipulated during actual surgical procedures to improve the operator's surgical dexterity. The surgical console can include a processing module, an external interface, simulation module, and a user interface. The processing module directs operation of peripheral devices coupled to the surgical console. The peripheral devices may include control devices, such as, but not limited to footswitches or other like control devices, surgical instruments such as, but not limited to, surgical microscopes, and other surgical training instruments, such as training surgical cutting tools. Additionally, the processing module may monitor the operating parameters and surgical modes associated with the training surgical procedure. The operator may receive feedback from the surgical console on his/her performance of the training surgical procedure.

Abstract: A multifunction surgical probe is disclosed, one embodiment comprising: a handpiece, operable to receive a light beam from a laser; and a firing switc h operable to provide a firing control signal to cause the laser to fire and emit the light beam. The surgical prove can further comprise an interface communicatively coupled to the firing switch and operable to communicate the firing control signal to the laser. The laser can be operably coupled to a surgical console operable to control the laser, and the interface can be communicatively coupled to the firing switch and operab le to communicatively couple the surgical probe to the surgical console and to communicate the firing control signal to the surgical console. The surgical console can be operable to control the laser based on the firing control signal. The surgical probe can also comprise an interlock switch operable to prevent the firing switch from firing the laser and a standby switch operable to produce a standby control signal to switch the laser between a stand-by and a ready state. The firing switch can be a progressively actuated switch operable to, at a first point in its range of motion, provide an initializing control signal operable to initialize the laser in preparation for firing and then, at a second point inits range of motion, provide the firing control signal to cause the laser to fire.

Abstract: A surgical footswitch that includes a base, a pedal, an encoder assembly, a wireless interface, and an internal power generator. The pedal mounts upon the base and pivots. The encoder assembly couples to the pedal. As the pedal pivots, the encoder assembly translates the mechanical signal of the pedal into a control signal based on the pedals position and/or orientation. The wireless interface couples the encoder assembly to receive the control signal. The wireless interface also couples the surgical footswitch to a surgical console operable to control and direct surgical equipment. The wireless interface passes the control signal from the encoder to the surgical console, which then directs the surgical equipment based on the control signal. This wireless interface eliminates the tangle of wires or tethers, which may be a hazard in the surgical theater. The internal power generator translates footswitch movement into stored energy to eliminate potential failures of the footswitch during a procedure and overcome the need to replace batteries within the footswitch.

Abstract: Generally speaking, the output brightness of an illuminator is varied by chopping an output light beam such that the beam is alternately interrupted and unhindered. An interrupter can be rapidly moved into and out of the transmission path of a light beam. The brightness of the light beam received at a site will be attenuated based on the amount of time per cycle the light beam remains obstructed versus unhindered.

According to one embodiment of the present invention, a basic laser surgical system may be coupled to an advanced control unit such that the basic laser surgical system may be controllable by the advanced control unit to implement a broader set of functionality. By moving less frequently used functionality to an advanced unit, the basic unit may be streamlined with regards 3 to both cost and size, and the learning curve required to utilize the basic unit may be reduced relative to a more feature-ladened unit, allowing the basic unit to be utilized in myriad situations or procedures where an "all-in-one" unit would be less than desirable.
