SOLUTION: The multifunction surgical probe includes a handpiece to receive a light beam from a laser unit and a firing switch to provide a firing control signal to cause the laser to emit and guide the light beam. The surgical probe may further include an interface coupled to the firing switch to transmit the firing control signal to the laser. The laser unit can be coupled to a surgical console and the interface can be communicatively coupled to the firing switch and to communicatively couple the surgical probe to the surgical console and to transmit the firing control signal to the surgical console. The surgical console can control the laser based on the firing control signal.
