Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser surgery unit which can perform a series of advanced functions by performing a series of basic functions and being remote-controlled. SOLUTION: In an embodiment of this invention, a laser surgery system with a series of basic functions can perform a series of advanced functions by remote control. In one embodiment of this invention, a basic laser surgery system is connected to an advanced control unit. This makes the advanced control unit control the basic laser surgery system, so that a series of more functions can be performed. A rarely used function is shifted to the advanced unit. Thus, the basic unit is rationalized in terms of both cost and size, the amount of learning required for the use of the basic unit becomes smaller than that of learning required for the use of a unit equipped with more functions, and the basic unit can be used in an infinite number of procedures or situations in which "integrated" unit is not desired. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multifunction surgical probe operable so as to provide independent control to a surgeon in an ophthalmic laser operation system. SOLUTION: The multifunction surgical probe includes a handpiece to receive a light beam from a laser unit and a firing switch to provide a firing control signal to cause the laser to emit and guide the light beam. The surgical probe may further include an interface coupled to the firing switch to transmit the firing control signal to the laser. The laser unit can be coupled to a surgical console and the interface can be communicatively coupled to the firing switch and to communicatively couple the surgical probe to the surgical console and to transmit the firing control signal to the surgical console. The surgical console can control the laser based on the firing control signal. The surgical probe can also include an interlock switch to prevent the firing switch from firing the laser unit and a standby switch to produce a standby control signal to switch the laser between a stand-by and a ready state. The firing switch may be a progressively actuated switch. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide a laser surgical system with a basic set of functionality which is remotely controllable to implement an advanced set of functionality. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a basic laser surgical system may be coupled to an advanced control unit such that the basic laser surgical syste m may be controllable by the advanced control unit to implement a broader set of functionality. By moving less frequently used functionality to an advanced unit, the basic unit may be streamlined with regards to both cost and size, and the learning curve required to utilize the basic unit may be reduced relative to a more feature-ladened unit, allowing the basic unit to be utilized in myriad situations or procedures where an "all-in-one" unit would be less than desirable.

Abstract:
A multifunction surgical probe is disclosed, one embodiment comprising: a handpiece, operable to receive a light beam from a laser; and a firing switc h operable to provide a firing control signal to cause the laser to fire and emit the light beam. The surgical prove can further comprise an interface communicatively coupled to the firing switch and operable to communicate the firing control signal to the laser. The laser can be operably coupled to a surgical console operable to control the laser, and the interface can be communicatively coupled to the firing switch and operab le to communicatively couple the surgical probe to the surgical console and to communicate the firing control signal to the surgical console. The surgical console can be operable to control the laser based on the firing control signal. The surgical probe can also comprise an interlock switch operable to prevent the firing switch from firing the laser and a standby switch operable to produce a standby control signal to switch the laser between a stand-by and a ready state. The firing switch can be a progressively actuated switch operable to, at a first point in its range of motion, provide an initializing control signal operable to initialize the laser in preparation for firing and then, at a second point inits range of motion, provide the firing control signal to cause the laser to fire.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an exemplary surgical illumination system that includes a first laser configured to emit a first light beam having a first spectral range, and an illumination probe optically connectable to the first laser. The first laser may be configured as a supercontinuum laser. The surgical illumination system may include a second laser configured to emit a second light beam having a second spectral range, and a beam combiner for combing the first and second laser beams to form a third laser beam having a spectral range of the first and second lasers. The illumination probe includes a fiber optic cable for delivering at least a portion of the first light beam to a surgical site. The fiber optic cable includes a fiber optic core having a diameter of 100 microns or less.
