    Abstract: A composition suitable for use in the treatment of textiles comprises an aqueous dispersion containing (a) a polyamide which is a co-condensate of 25-40% by weight of one or more lactams having 6-12 carbon atoms in the lactam ring or of equivalent omega-aminocarboxylic acids, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of hexamethylene diamine with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of 4,41-diamino-dicyclohexylmethane with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms and 0-10% by weight of one or more other polyamide-forming substances and (b) a protective colloid which is a water-soluble copolymer having a K value of at least 90 and derived from 10-35% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, 57.5-90% by weight of a mixture consisting of acrylamide and 5-40% by weight (on the whole of the monomers) of methacrylamide and 0-7.5% by weight of one or more other monomers. Suitable other polyamide-forming substances are dicarboxylic acids, omega-aminocarboxylic acids or diamines which are branched or contain a hetero atom in the chain, and C-substituted lactams. The other monomers in the protective colloid may be a -chloro-acrylic, phenylacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or vinylsulphonic acid or an anhydride, salt or ester thereof, methyl or ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acetamide, N-dimethylacrylamide, N-methylacrylamide, N-ethylacrylamide or a vinyl lactam. Particularly preferred protective colloids contain 0.005-1% by weight of copolymerizable monomers containing N-methylol groups, e.g. derivatives of urea, melamine, dicyandiamide and guanidine containing N-methylol groups and groups with polymerizable olefinic double bonds and particularly N-methylolmethacrylamide and N-methylolacrylamide. The dispersion may contain 0.5-5% by weight of the protective colloid based on the weight of the polyamide. The dispersions may be prepared by mixing a solution of the polyamide in an organic solvent, e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, butanol or a mixture thereof, with water which contains the protective colloid and, if desired, distilling off all or part of the solvent. The dispersion may also contain polyolefines, polyacrylates, water repellents, dyes, pigments, thickening agents, organic solvents and reaction products, which may be etherified with alcohols containing up to four carbon atoms, of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, ethyleneurea, trimethyleneurea, 4,5-dihydroxy imidazolidone-(2), triazone (2) and its 5-alkyl and 5-hydroxy-alkyl derivatives having up to four carbon atoms in the alkyl or hydroxyl alkyl radical, 5-hydroxytrimethyleneurea or urones. In one example, the dispersion also includes an acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate (50/50) copolymer which has been incompletely hydrolysed with ammonia.ALSO:Fabrics e.g. of cotton, are coated with an aqueous dispersion containing (a) a polyamide which is a cocondensate of 25-40% by weight of one or more lactams having 6-12 carbon atoms in the lactam ring or of equivalent omega-aminocarboxylic acids, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of hexamethylene diamine with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of 4, 41-diaminodicyclohexylmethane with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms and 0-10% by weight of one or more other polyamide-forming substances and (b) a protective colloid which is a water-soluble copolymer having a K value of at least 90 and derived from 10-35% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, 57.5-90% by weight of a mixture consisting of acrylamide and 5-40% by weight (on the whole of the monomers) of methacrylamide and 0-7.5% by weight of one or more other monomers, and then dried and heated to at least 100 DEG C. Suitable other polyamide-forming substances are dicarboxylic acids, omega-aminocarboxylic acids or diamines which are branched or contain a hetero atom in the chain, and C-substituted lactams. The other monomers in the protective colloid may be a -chloro-acrylic, phenylacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or vinylsulphonic acid or an anhydride, salt or ester thereof, methyl or ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acetamide, N-dimethylacrylamide, N-methyl acrylamide, N-ethyl-acrylamide or a vinyl lactam. Particularly preferred protective colloids contain 0.005-1% by weight of copolymerizable monomers containing N-methylol groups, e.g. derivatives of urea, melamine dicyandiamide and guanidine containing N-methylol groups, and groups with polymerizable olefinic double bonds and particularly N-methylolmethacrylamide and N-methylolacrylamide. The dispersion may contain 0.5-5% by weight of the protective colloid based on the weight of the polyamide. The dispersions may be prepared by mixing a solution of the polyamide in an organic solvent, e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, butanol or a mixture thereof, with water which contains the protective colloid and if desired distilling off all or part of the solvent. The dispersion may also contain polyolefines, poly-acrylates, water repellents, dyes, pigments, thickening agents, organic solvents and reaction products, which may be etherified with alcohols containing up to four carbon atoms, of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, ethyleneurea, trimethyleneurea, 4, 5-dihydroxy imidazolidone-(2), triazone (2) and its 5-alkyl and 5-hydroxyalkyl derivatives having up to four carbon atoms in the alkyl or hydroxyl alkyl radical, 5-hydroxytrimethyl-eneurea or uranes.ALSO:Textile material, e.g. cotton fabric, is finished and non-woven fabrics bonded by treating them with an aqueous dispersion containing (a) a polyamide which is a cocondencate of 25-40% by weight of one or more lactams having 6-12 carbon atoms in the lactam ring or of equivalent omega-aminocarboxylic acids, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of hexamethylene diamine with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms, 25-40% by weight of one or more salts of 4, 41-diaminodicyclohexylmethane with linear dicarboxylic acids having 6-12 carbon atoms and 0-10% by weight of one or more other polyamide-forming substances and (b) a protective colloid which is a water-soluble copolymer having a K value of at least 90 and derived from 10-35% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, 57.5-90% by weight of a mixture consisting of acrylamide and 5-40% by weight (on the whole of the monomers) of methacrylamide and 0-7.5% by weight of one or more other monomers, and then drying and heating the treated material to at least 100 DEG C. Suitable other polyamide-forming substances are dicarboxylic acids, omega-aminocarboxylic acids or diamines which are branched or contain a hetero atom in the chain, and C-substituted lactams. The other monomers in the protective colloid may be a -chloro-acrylic, phenylacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or vinylsulphonic acid or an anhydride, salt or ester thereof, methyl or ethyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acetamide, N-dimethylacrylamide, N-methyl acrylamide, N-ethylacrylamide or a vinyl lactam.     Abstract: A damping or sealing element comprises a polyamide which has been obtained by polymerization at a temperature below 200 DEG C. of one or more lactams having more than six ring members by means of an alkaline reaction initiator and a polymerization activator. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, caprylic lactam, oenanthic lactam and lauric lactam. Specified reaction initiators are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and alkaline-reacting compounds thereof. Specified activators are acid halides, substituted ureas and thioureas, substituted guanidines, urethanes, isocyanates and carbodiimides. Cross-linking agents, plasticizers, stabilizers, brighteners, dyes, pigments and fillers e.g. ground slag, siliceous chalk, graphite, kaolin and mica may be included in the reaction mixture. Cellular polyamides may be obtained by including substances which form gaseous products at the polymerization temperature e.g. hexane, octane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, azoisobutyronitrile, benzenesulphonic acid hydrazide are aryl sulphazides in the reaction mixtures. The examples describe the polymerization in a mould of e -caprolactam and caprylic lactam in the presence of the potassium compound of e -caprolactam and bis-(caprylic lactam-N-carboxylic acid)-hexamethylene diamide. The damping and sealing elements may be in the form of clamping means for drills, reamers or boning bars, frustoconical rings, flange sealing rings, gasket discs, shrunk-on sleeves for joining smooth pipes, pipe couplings, slipring packings, seals for manhole covers, packing rings for stuffing boxes, lid seals, seals for anti-friction bearings, sealing members for hydraulic shock valves and valve seals.

    Abstract: S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of alkaline catalysts, 0,1 to 15% by weight based on the weight of caprolactam, of caprylic lactam and with the aid of activators having the general formula wherein R1 represents hydrogen or an organic radical, R represents an organic radical, X represents oxygen, sulphur or the divalent radical > NR1 and Y represents the radicals -OR, -SR or -R. Many activators and catalysts are specified. In the examples, S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of caprylic lactam and:- (1) sodium methylate and bis-(caprylic lactam-N-carboxylic acid)-hexamethylene diamide-1:6 and (2) potassium and (a) bis-(caprylic lactam-N-carboxylic acid)-hexamethylene diamide-1:6, (b) tricyclohexyl guanidine and (c) 7-methylphenylene-2:4-bis-N:N1-phenylurethane.     Abstract: A process for the polymerization of lactams having from 4 to 12 ring carbon atoms in the presence of an alkaline reaction initiator and a polymerization activator comprises using as the polymerization activator a substituted urethane which is capable of being dissolved undecomposed in the lactam at the polymerization temperature, having the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 represent a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by fluorine or ether groups, or in which R1 and R2 together represent a divalent acryl radical of the general formula -CH2-(CH2)n-CO where n is an integer from 3 to 11, X is oxygen, sulphur or > N-R4 wherein R4 is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical as defined above, or in which R1 has the meanings defined above and R2 and/or R3 represent the radicals where Y is a divalent and X a trivalent hydrocarbon radical with from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by fluorine or ether groups, and X, R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above. Specified lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, caprylic lactam and lauric lactam. Many activators are specified. In the examples:- (1) caprylic lactam is polymerized in the presence of 1,6-hexamethylene-N,N1-bis-ethylurethane and a caprylic lactam-potassium hydroxide reaction product; (2) caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of potassium and 1-methyl-phenylene-2,4-bis-N,N1-benzylurethane and (3) caprylic lactam is polymerized in the presence of potassium and p,p1-phenylene-bis-N,N1-phenylurethane.
